Federal Government Directs Banks To Stop Sacking Workers

Federal Government Directs Banks To Stop Sacking Workers

The federal government has directed banks, insurance and financial institutions to immediately suspend the ongoing retrenchment in the financial sector.

Chris Ngige, minister of labour and employment, gave the directive in Abuja on Friday, saying his office had received several complaints from those affected by the development.

Ngige said any action taken in that regard would be seen as illegal, saying a meeting on the way forward would be held on July 2 with all parties.

The statement reads: “Following spate of petitions and complaints from stakeholders in the banking, insurance and financial institutions, I hereby direct the suspension of the on-going retrenchment pending the outcome of the conciliatory meetings in the industry.

“This is as a result of the apprehension by my office of the various disputes in the sector in accordance and in compliance with the provisions of the labour laws of Nigeria.

“In this wise, all the retrenchments and redundancies done in the last four months and all proposed ones should be put on hold pending the outcome of the proposed stakeholders’ summit for the banking, insurance and financial institutions’ employers and employees, slated for July 2.”

No amount of enjoyment in this world is worth destroy your destiny for, but some will not listen. In a recent chat, Nollywood actress Anita Joseph brags about her raunchy photos. Her words:

“I just joined Instagram in April and I have been very active. I am aware that a picture I posted that showed my cleavage attracted a lot of attention. Some Nigerians are hypocrites and pretenders. A lot of them used that picture to masturbate and feel good..."

Nigerian student scores 5.0 GPA in Russia, first in the world

Nigerian student scores 5.0 GPA in Russia, first in the world

Victor Olalusi.

The Federal Ministry of Education on Wednesday in Abuja honoured Dr Victor Olalusi who scored 5.0 Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) in the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, Russian National Research Medical University, Moscow (RNRMU) in 2013, arguably the first in the world.

Olalusi, who was the best graduating student in the whole Russian Federation in 2013, studied in RNRMU under the Russia-Nigeria Bilateral Education Agreement.

Olalusi previously had the best WAEC result in 2004, JAMB Best Science Student (JAMB score 322) – 2006. Cowbell Prize Award – 2006. Medicine First Merit list (OAU) – 2006. Highest OAU Post UME (score – 325)  – 2006.

Speaking at the event, Dr MacJohn Nwaobiala, the Permanent Secretary in the ministry said a lot of Nigerian students were brilliant but Olalusi was a genius.

He said Olalusi had become an ambassador not only to the ministry but to Nigeria and Russia.

“We have to search the Guinness Book of Records for anybody who has achieved 5.0 in a university. It is curious and strange that all those that evaluated his performance could not find reason to reduce a point from him.

“You should be the ambassador of the Federal Scholarship Board, Ministry of Education, Nigeria and the Russian Federation.

“I look forward to the day you will stand before the President to receive your honour. We have recommendations to that effect, ’’ Nwaobiala said.

He then urged Olalusi to continue to be a role model to young Nigerians and also called on him to explore opportunities in post graduate research.

In her speech, Mrs Ifeoma Agunwa, the Director, Federal Scholarship Board, said Olalusi made 5.0 GPA in all the courses he took in the seven years he studied Medicine in Russia.

She said “Olalusi never had a 4.99 GPA. Even in the Russian language class, he did not fall below 5.0.’’

In her citation on Olalusi, Agunwa said he ranked as one of the best students in the faculty which handed him a place in RNRMU’s Hall of fame for academic excellence.

She said that Olalusi had registered with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria and had the compulsory one-year housemanship training at State Specialist Hospital, Akure, Ondo State.

According to her, he is presently going through the compulsory National Youth Service scheme in Rivers.

Mr Artem Romanov, who represented the Russian Embassy, said that Olalusi’s feat was very significant for everybody in Russia.

Romanov said “Nigeria is blessed with abundant human potential which is officially acknowledged in Russia.

“It has been acknowledged in the Russian Ministry of Education that Nigerians have a lot of exceptional talents. Genetically, Nigerians grasp knowledge easily.

“Olalusi is a hardworking person. It is not easy to achieve such in Russia; it goes with talent and hard work.

“I urge you to engage your knowledge in the development of your father land.’’

While showing his appreciation, Olalusi thanked God for his rare feat and also commended the Federal Government and the Scholarship Board for the opportunity given to young Nigerians to distinguish themselves.

Mr Olarewaju Olalusi, the father of Olalusi, said that his son’s achievement was as a result of hard work.

Olalusi said his son did not attend high class schools but normal public schools which spoke volumes of the standard of education in Nigeria.

He then urged parents to monitor their wards closely and make sure they were not distracted from their studies

According to news reports, in 1984 already, the former heavyweight boxing champion told a press conference in Beirut, that “the United States is the stronghold of Zionism and imperialism.” On a later visit to two Palestinian refugee camps Muhammad Ali is quoted as saying: “I declare support for the Palestinian struggle to liberate their homeland.”

In 1985 the boxer even travelled to Israel in an attempt to secure the release of Lebanese and Palestinian priosners held by the Israeli regime.

Ali’s determination and commitment to civil rights, anti-imperialism and social justice motivated many of our people (and our international allies) in the anti-apartheid movement. Today Ali inspires many Palestinians (and us their international allies) in the struggle and boycott of Israeli Apartheid.

FG Scraps Post UTME, Pegs Cut-off Point At 180

FG Scraps Post UTME, Pegs Cut-off Point At 180

The federal government yesterday announced the cancellation of the post Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) into the nation’s institutions of higher learning.

Post UTME is usually conducted by universities for candidates after they have passed the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations.

Making the pronouncement yesterday in Abuja to declare open the 2016 combined policy meeting on admission to universities, polytechnics and other higher institutions in Nigeria, the Minister of Education ,  Malam Adamu Adamu, said the federal government has confidence in the examinations conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, adding that there is no need for other examinations to be conducted by universities after JAMB exams.

He said, “As far as I am concerned, the nation has confidence in what JAMB is doing. The universities should not be holding another examination and if the universities have any complain against JAMB, let them bring it and then we address it.”
Adamu maintained that since JAMB is qualified enough to conduct tests, there’s no need for tertiary institutions to conduct test again for students to gain admission.

The minister also asked the Joint Admissions Matriculation Board to stop extra charges on several categories of changes on admissions such as the change of course, change of school and others.
Meanwhile, delegates from different higher institutions across the country who converged on Abuja yesterday at the Combined Policy meeting, rounded off their debate over the cut off marks for Year 2016 Admissions into the tertiary institutions, with a cut-off point at 180.
However, the delegates maintained that the schools should not rule out screening  of candidates ,that  screening of is still  vital to gaining entrance into the universities.
They argued that in the quest for knowledge, educational standard should not be lowered in the country.

Speaking with journalists, the JAMB Registrar, Prof ‘Dibu Ojerinde, said,  “180 is given and no institution will go below 180 this year, And some universities can go above it, I know Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife will not go below 200 and University of Lagos will not go below 200 and also University of Ibadan. All these ones stand. But 180 is  a bench mark for others.”

He said this year, the examination board  have more than enough candidates with over 1.5 million  candidate, saying, “So we will get enough candidates to take in all the schools if they are serious”

The JAMB registrar said re- distribution is already ongoing because it is embedded in the registration procedure.

He reiterated the minister of Education’s pronouncement saying, “for post UTME ,no more writing of post UTME anymore but institutions will screen their candidates.

However, touts protested at the venue of the 2016 Combined Policy meeting on Thursday.
They carried placards with various inscriptions, some of which called on the federal government, National Assembly and other major stakeholders to put an end to the conduct of the post UTME exams.
Some also called on the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the ICPC to probe university administrators on the utilisation of the post UTME.
