Our appeal to the peace-loving people of the world

Our appeal to the peace-loving people of the world

President Buhari made the struggle against Boko Haram in particular and terrorism in general a few focus of his address to the closing Executive Session of the 2015 Commonwealth Summit in Malta on Sunday. He said‘We are witnesses to the growing phenomenon of terrorism that is affecting us all, whether big or small. The reign of terror will only succeed if peace-loving people choose to remain idle. But I am confident that through our collective efforts, we will defeat this scourge and restore peace’.

We are glad to see the issue raised at such a high-profile international event. And we echo the president’s call for peace-loving people to act now. We would only add that this message applies on two levels. First, as we have long argued, ordinary Nigerians must be vigilant. We must look after each other by looking out for suspicious activity and reporting it to the authorities. But we must also remember that it is national unity that will finally defeat terrorism, so we must avoid division at all costs, and always remember to put Nigeria first.

The second level on which President Buhari’s message applies is on the international stage. The world must not remain idle in the face of the terrorist threat. And nor must it restrict its response to rhetoric and tokenism. Air strikes on Islamic State in Syria in response to the killings in Paris are all very well. But are they part of a joined up strategy both to defeat Islamic State and to stamp out its affiliates worldwide, not least Boko Haram?

We now know that Boko Haram killed more people in 2014 than the group towards which it has pledged allegiance, Islamic State. Any global counter-terrorism strategy that does not include taking on Boko Haram cannot be taken seriously as a strategy, and must be suspected of putting the appearance of action ahead of any meaningful attempt to act effectively.

NajatRochdi, the UN’s Resident Coordinator in Cameroon has warned that we only have limited time to act decisively against Boko Haram. And she made the very important point that it is in the interests not just of West Africans, but the whole world to do so, not least European nations, whose current refugee crisis is a direct result of Islamist terror in the Middle East and Africa.Rochdi said,‘Investing in today and reversing the trend is investing in a better security and stability of Europe tomorrow. And tomorrow is really tomorrow, not 2030. It’s doable. But it’s really a very small window of opportunity. If you ask me the same question next year, the answer will be no.’

In raising the issue of investment, Rochdi reminds us of the broader context behind the terrorist menace. It will not enough to defeat Boko Haram militarily unless we also do something about the socio-economic conditions in which they have been able to recruit.

Again, this is well known. At the 25th Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union in Johannesburg in June, President Buharispoke of, ‘The destructive effects of the inhuman and criminal campaigns of the Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria and neighbouring countries; the Al-Shabab attacks in East Africa, and the activities of the Al-Qaida in the Maghreb’. But he also added, ‘some of the greater challenges to our peoples within this Union still lie in the political, economic, as well as peace and security spheres. Our continent is currently bedevilled by the twin evils of terrorism and insecurity; poverty, youth unemployment, and underdevelopment.’

So let the peace-loving people of the world take heed. Defeating terrorism must mean taking on Boko Haram as well as Islamic State. And Boko Haram will only be defeated if Nigeria and our neighbours can be put back on the path to peaceful development, so that we can finally meet the potential of our great nation. Please lend a hand as we take up this great challenge, and #StandUpForNigeria!

Meet The British MPs Who Want The UK To Support Biafra

Andrew Sweeney

Meet the members of parliament (MPs) who have tabled a bill in the British parliament calling for the UK to recognise Biafra as an independent country.

An early day parliamentary motion was filed by MPs Tom Elliott and Danny Kinahan of the Ulster Unionist Party (UPP), ironically a party dedicated to preserving the territorial integrity of the UK.

The motion is that this “House recognises the calls for the independence of territories that constituted the Biafran republic.”

“The Biafran issue could be improved with the co-operation of the Nigerian government by offering a referendum; and urges the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to use its diplomatic strength to assist in the resolution of this matter.”

Elliott is a former British army officer who served during the conflict in Northern Ireland. He is a staunch opponent of Irish unification and gay rights and is a former leader of the UUP. He is married with two children.

Tom Elliott MP

Kinahan is a new member of parliament who was elected at the last election in May this year. Like Elliott, he is a former soldier and is married with four children.

Danny Kinahan MP

Earlier, senior Labour MP Harriet Harman sent a letter to British foreign minister Phillip Hammond demanding to know why pro-Biafra activist Nmandi Kanu had been arrested in Nigeria as Harman represents the constituency where Kanu lives in the UK.

I'm childless! But, my landlady is pregnant for my husband

I'm childless! But, my landlady is pregnant for my husband!'

My name is Myra and I'm a very angry and bitter woman. And it's all thanks to the 'witch' called Hetty, my landlady. *** Before the 'Jezebel', came into our lives, my husband CJ and I were doing just fine. We had been married for about eight years and though we did not have children, CJ was not too worried. "When the time comes, we will have children. God's time is the best," he often said anytime I grew anxious over our childless state. You know how our African society is. Once a couple gets married, people especially family members, friends, colleagues and other so called 'well-wishers' expect the woman to start popping out babies as quickly as possible. My husband's parents and other family members live far away from us and hardly visit so pressure from their end was not much. All the same, I never relented in my quest to have my own child. I fasted and prayed and cried to God to remember me. But the years went by and there was still no issue. Then about two years ago, we had to move to another apartment from where we were staying in Lagos due to problems with the landlord. He had increased the rent by over fifty percent without warning and threatened to eject any tenant who did not comply. My husband, who felt the new rent was too high for the flat decided we should move. So that's how we ended up in our new place. The house, made up of four flats is owned by Hetty who had inherited it from her parents. She lived in one of the flats downstairs with her two children, both teenagers. Hetty, who is in her late 30s, was said to be divorced or separated from her husband. When we moved in newly, the woman was so nice and helpful to us, always asking if we had any problems. She would invite us to her home and even cook for us. With time, we became very close. I thought in my naivety that she was just being nice. How did I know that she had designs on my husband! Anyway, I found out later that my husband was dating our landlady. It had been going on for months before I knew about it. You see, because of my job I'm hardly at home. My office is in Victoria Island so I leave home early and return home late as well. My husband is a business man so his schedule is more flexible than mine. There are days he does not go out at all, but stays at home and works on his computer and makes contacts on phone. Since the story came out about their affair, friends and other concerned well-wishers have told me that I should have been more careful, that I should not have allowed a woman like her, single and still quite young and pretty to get close to my husband. But what were they expecting me to do, tie a grown up like him up? He's mature enough to know right from wrong and that dating that woman is something he should not have done. ***** I found out about the affair from a neighbour who had been seeing them going out together and acting like lovers whenever I was at work. I confronted CJ and though he denied it initially, he finally owned up and confessed. He pleaded with me to forgive and forget that it was the 'work of the devil.' "What devil?" I countered furiously. "Instead of accepting responsibility for cheating on me with our landlady, you are blaming the devil!" I was very angry with him and I felt hurt too. What the woman has that I lacked, I wondered, weeping bitter tears. Ok, she was very pretty but I was not bad looking and was even younger than her. CJ promised to stop seeing the woman, also begging me not to go and fight her as we could be kicked out of the apartment. I loved my husband very much and he meant the world to me so I forgave him. Things went on as normal though I was more vigilant this time around. As for my landlady, she travelled with her children abroad for the summer holidays and I did not see her for some time. The children came back and resumed school but she stayed behind for a few more months. When she returned later, it was clear to even a blind man that she was pregnant. I did not think much of it and just ignored her as I had been doing since I found out she was sleeping with my husband. That was until CJ broke the terrible news to me, that he was responsible for her pregnancy! How could this have happened, was the first thought that entered my mind. I was, as expected devastated by the new development. Here was I, married to him for nearly eight years and yet to produce a child. Yet a clandestine affair with our landlady had resulted in a pregnancy. I became ill when I heard the news and had to take some time off from work. When my moth er who lived near us heard what happened, she came to spend time with me. It was my mother and younger sister who came with her that went to my landlady's house and fought with her. Much as I hated the woman, I was not in support of physical combat and told my mother to leave her alone. The damage had been done and fighting her would not solve anything, I reasoned. *** It was my husband that I was more worried about. He had become so happy since Hetty announced she was pregnant for him. "Finally, I will be a father," he had stated with obvious pride the day he broke the news to me. When I recovered, I called him one day that due to the situation of things, I no longer felt comfortable living in the same compound with the landlady, that we had to move. To my shock, CJ was vehemently opposed to my suggestion, insisting there was no need to relocate. "Hetty will soon put to bed and as the father of the baby, I need to be around to look after them," he said. I was not ready to give in and I gave him an ultimatum: it's either we left or he should forget about me and our marriage. I told him I was not ready to share my man with any woman, least of all that conniving landlady of ours. "I can't stay here anymore. Seeing that woman every day with her big, protruding tummy drives me crazy. I need to get away for my own sanity and peace of mind," I said. That was when he told me that I could do whatever I wanted, that he was not ready to go anywhere. "I'm going nowhere. We just moved here so why would we be moving so soon? Learn to adjust to the situation or ..." he rejoined. Since I'm not ready to adjust, I have begun making alternative plans. My younger sister, who has her own apartment in town, has suggested I move in with her until CJ comes to his senses. I don't know what will happen to my marriage when I leave. I still love my husband and I know he cares about me too, but that woman seems to have cast a spell or used 'love charm' on him or something. I need to get away before I lose my mind with worry and stress. I don't know if I have taken the right decision or not. But I need some space right now before I lose my mind or even die prematurely from all the trouble my husband and his mistress have caused me...

N1tn fine: MTN may sack more workers

N1tn fine: MTN may sack more workers

Feelers emanating from MTN Nigeria on Thursday indicated that the telecommunications firm might be nurturing plans to reduce its workforce by sacking a sizeable number of its junior employees.

This is coming one week after the first indigenous Chief Executive Officer of MTN Nigeria, Michael Ikpoki, and the Regulatory and Corporate Service Executive, Akinwale Goodluck, exited the company.

Ikpoki and Goodluck left the company following the imposition of a N1.04tn fine on it by the Nigerian Communications Commission for not cutting off over five million unregistered Subscriber Identification Module cards. Following intense lobby, the Federal Government has now slashed the fine by 25 per cent to N780bn.

Reliable sources at the Lagos headquarters of the company told our correspondent on Thursday that the management was planning cut down on the number of employees, especially those in the lower cadre.

Gambia becomes Islamic republic

Gambia becomes Islamic republic

The Gambia has been declared an Islamic republic by President Yahya Jammeh who said he wanted to further distance the West African nation from its colonial past, UK Guardian reports.

The tiny, formerly secular country joins the ranks of other officially Islamic republics such as Iran and Afghanistan.

“In line with the country’s religious identity and values I proclaim Gambia as an Islamic state.

“As Muslims are the majority in the country, Gambia cannot afford to continue the colonial legacy,” Jammeh said on the state television.

The Gambia’s population of 1.8 million people are 95% Muslim. Jammeh said citizens of other faiths would still be able to practise.

Jammeh, an animated orator who has earned the reputation for making surprise declarations over the course of his 21-year presidency, pulled the Gambia out of the Commonwealth in 2013, calling it neo-colonial. In 2007 he claimed to have found a herbal cure for Aids.

In November the president announced he would outlaw female genital mutilation after international pressure that included a campaign by the Guardian. However activists have since said continued international pressure is needed for the president to pass his declaration into law.

Despite strong commercial ties with Britain and other European countries whose citizens are regular visitors to the Gambia’s white-sand beaches, relations with the west have deteriorated in recent years.

Buhari Order Immediate Arrest Of Okonjo-Iweala And Emefiele

Buhari Order Immediate Arrest Of Okonjo-Iweala And Emefiele

It has long been established that a subordinate has no legal obligation to obey illegal orders from his/her superior.

This point is important as we examine the recent nauseating revelations about the huge sums of money that the former finance minister, Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Central Bank governor, Godwin Emefiele, made available to the now arrested former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki.

Few days ago, Okonjo-Iweala admitted giving Sambo Dasuki the sum of $322m on the orders of former President Goodluck Jonathan. Before that the same Okonjo-Iweala admitted spending $2bn from the Excess Crude Oil account on the orders of the former President.

The Central Bank of Nigeria under Godwin Emefiele has admitted giving Sambo Dasuki billions of Naira and dollars on the orders of the former president.

A good part of these monies were given to Sambo Dasuki in cash in clear contravention of existing anti-money laundering laws by the country’s chief banker. Let us put the money laundering issue to the side for now.

The problem with the orders from the former President to the then finance minister and current CBN governor is that they were illegal.

Neither the President nor any other government official in Nigeria has the legal authority to order the spending of funds that have not been appropriated by the National Assembly! Both subordinates knew or ought to know that the orders they were obeying were illegal and should have refused to comply.

Resignation was an option. Between these two subordinates they cost the nation in excess of $5B by obeying the referenced illegal orders. That is just what we know so far and this kind of behavior is going on at every level of government everyday.

The arrest and prosecution of Okonjo-Iweala and Godwin Emediefe will send out the message that “the president ordered the payment” is not a defense known to the laws of Nigeria.

Their prosecution is imperative in light of the fact that a lot of the money being stolen in the country is not in the custody of the people stealing them. They rely on a group of people that I call facilitators in an upcoming article to get access to public funds in the custody of the facilittors.

In almost every case of monies made available to Sambo Dasuki, all those making the money available were following illegal orders and they knew it. The time has come for Buhari to beam the searchlight on this group of people.

The commercial bankers who allow government officials to come into their banks and withdraw millions and billions in cash in apparent violation of anti-money laundering laws are facilitators of corruption because they know the funds are dirty hence the need to terminate the paper trail through cash withdrawal. The bankers ought to be in jail too partly because they make tracing these funds more complicated.

To understand the importance of subordinates not obeying illegal orders, imagine that Okonjo-Iweala, NNPC and Godwin Emefiele refused to obey the former President’s illegal orders and resigned under pressure and spilled the beans.

With Nigerians fully aware of the attempted fraud it would have been difficult for their replacements to obey the same illegal orders.

Buhari’s anti-corruption war must involve establishing a culture that encourages civil servants, and bank employees to disobey illegal orders.

This will prevent our money from leaving the treasury rather than chasing after the money after it has been stolen.

Before closing I will like to remind people that a majority of the civilians and military officers who were tried, executed or jailed by the post-World War 2 Nuremberg Trials courts in Germany were obeying orders from Adolf Hitler.

The problem was that Adolf Hitler had no legal basis for issuing the orders and those who ended up being executed for obeying the orders had no obligation to obey the orders.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Godwin Emefiele should be familiar with the Nuremberg Trials. The lesson is that a superior cannot order a subordinate to do anything that the superior has no authority to do himself/herself.

Nigerians must rid themselves of the idea that a President has the power to order anyone to do anything in the absence of enabling legislation. Na oga say make I do am is not a defense.

What is sleep orgasm? - Here's how you can experience it

What is sleep orgasm? - Here's how you can experience it

A 'sleep orgasm' may seem a distant fantasy - but it is much more common than you realise, according to researchers.
The phenomenon, where you wake up climaxing, is not just a regular pleasure for hormonal teenagers.
Around 37 per cent of women will climax while dozing by the age of 45, according to researchers.
It occurs primarily in women aged between their 40s and mid-50s, Broadly reports.

Jade, 24, told the magazine sleep orgasms can occur a couple of times a week, with or without the help of self-pleasure.
She said: "It's a bit like a present from your brain."

There are a number of ways your chances of having a sleep orgasm can be increased.

These include lying on your front when you sleep, being particularly tired before bed and when you haven't experienced an orgasm for awhile.
Kinky thoughts as you're nodding off also increase the likelihood.
Researchers and writers for The Orgasm Answer Guide say: “There is good reason to believe that orgasms while sleeping are not, in fact, the result of genital stimulation, but instead are created in the brain."

Only 25 per cent of women consistently orgasmic during sexual intercourse, with experts stating that is much more complex for women than men.
But Dr Debby Herbenick, associate professor at Indiana University , told Broadly: "Orgasms generally gets easier with age and experience, and when women have sex with regular partners who they feel care about them, thus we see higher rates of orgasm among those in their mid to late 20s, 30s, and 40s."
