Inspiring! Rukky Sanda donates & installs fans in an entire ward in LUTH on Valentine's day

Nollywood actress, Rukky Sanda spent Valentine's day in an inspiring way.She visited the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) and donated and installed fans in a whole ward...Read below

I want to give a big shout out to these beautiful amazing doctors & Nurses at the D2 children's ward in LUTH and every other amazing doctor/nurse/individual that has dedicated their lives towards saving lives, esp the those working in the govt* teaching hospitals... Wow! What more can I say? May God bless ur hearts and fill ur homes with joy, favor, happiness & bliss cos it's not easy doing what they do and for that reason I applaud them greatly. It's funny last Tuesday for some reason my niece was sent there from a private hospital (she's perfectly fine now by d way) so I had to visit her & spent an hour there which made me a lil sick for d past couple of days... No ventilation, ppl had to buy their own personal table fans upon admission. ...

Something had to be done & I decided to donate and install fans to d whole ward which I did today in addition to getting toys & activity books for d kids & gift hampers for Ds beautiful nurses & doctors working in such harsh & uncomfortable conditions... Ok this is getting long & I'm tired of typing Ds story. Bottom line is the ward I visited is just a tiny little fraction of the general children's ward* Tz 4 floors and I did one. That building is only a tiny little part of LUTH and LUTH is only a tiny little part of the rest of the govt hospitals in Lagos let alone d country.

I did the little I could today and it's definitely in my top priorities to do more every single time I can but together we can achieve greater things. The little u give and do goes a long way. It's high time we stop yelling govt*** cos if it's by our voices being heard a lot of things should be in order by now in this country. It's time we as individuals, not only celebrities it's time we all start to lend a helping hand and together we will achieve #Greatness. God bless u guys, happy14th

Saraki Begs President Buhari & Tinubu Again Over CCT Trial

Saraki Begs President Buhari & Tinubu Again Over CCT Trial

Senate President Bukola Saraki has made fresh moves to plead with President Muhammadu Buhari and the National Leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, following the Supreme Court judgment that his trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal must continue.

In the 13 counts initiated by the Federal Government, Saraki was said to have made false asset declaration in his forms at the Code of Conduct Bureau as a two-term governor of Kwara State.

And now that the CCT has fixed a date - March 10 - for his trial Saraki is getting more desperate.

It was reliably gathered that since February 5, Saraki had been making moves to indirectly reach out and beg Buhari and Tinubu.

A top government source, told PUNCH that Saraki could not reach out directly to Buhari on the matter as he is very much aware that President Buhari can never cover a corrupt person.

The source added that the Senate President resorted to sending emissaries to Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo when Buhari was on a six-day vacation and Osinbajo was the acting President.

The delegation was reportedly led by the Senate Leader, Ali Ndume.

The source said the Vice-President made his position and that of the President clear to Saraki’s emissaries.

He said, “Saraki knows the kind of person the President is and I think he won’t approach him directly on this matter. But yes, I can tell you that he is reaching out indirectly.

“He sent emissaries to meet with the Vice-President when the President was on vacation and the Vice-President was on the chair in acting capacity.

“The emissaries had met with the Vice-President under the cover of the developments about the 2016 budget. In the process, they put the issue of Saraki forward.

“Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, however, made it equivocally clear to them that the two issues could not be mixed. He told them that the issue of the budget was different from the trial of Saraki.”

On the issue of Tinubu, it was gathered that Saraki had reached out to not less than 10 opinion leaders and clerics to visit the APC national leader at his home in Bourdillon, Ikoyi, Lagos.

Saraki and Tinubu fell out in June last year when he defied the directive of the APC and became the Senate President under very controversial circumstances.

Saraki further ensured that Tinubu’s preferred candidates were denied principal offices at the Senate.

The former governor of Lagos State subsequently broke all communication with Saraki, describing him in an open letter as an ‘indisciplined and disloyal man who is a member of the PDP in soul.’

A reliable source said Tinubu is not interested in Saraki’s latest moves.

He said, “Access from Saraki’s camp has been blocked. Tinubu has been disappointed in every way. It was the party that picked Ahmed Lawan. He was not Tinubu’s initial candidate but he did it all the same. So, he has decided to (wash his) hands and will not say a word again regarding Saraki.

“We have been informed that Saraki is working with a team of people in Ilorin that will storm Lagos. Top leaders there including Muslim clerics are being put together to visit Lagos and mediate on his behalf but Tinubu is not interested.”

He added, “There is no deal to be made anymore. Saraki never conceded anything. He did not give any of our people any principal position. He then went ahead to increase the number of Senate committees by fiat just to placate those that have been following him to court.

“Every concession was denied... Tinubu has moved on... Saraki should go and get good lawyers. As you can see, attempts to remove the CCT chairman did not work. Attempts to stop the trial at the Supreme Court have also failed.”

I hope the blacks too can emulate him, there are always big differences between the way a man with white skin reason compared to the way a man with black skin thinks and acts.

While our black brother, Floyd Mayweather is spending millions of dollars on ashawo and strip girls right in his house, his fellow champion boxer, Manny Pacquiao is spending on churches and the poor.

As you read this, Many has built hundreds of houses for the poor in his hometown in Philippines. He said he loves giving to the poor and this is accordance to the words of God in the scriptures.

The picture above is one of such houses he built. Manny Pacquiao confirmed it and wrote:

I'm so happy giving this houses free to my constituents in Sarangani Province from my own pocket more than thousand families are the beneficiaries. and i'm still building more because i always believe what the bible says; 1 Peter 4:8-10 NIV

[8] Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. [9] Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. SEE GOBE: "You Must Marry Your Wife’s Corpse"

SEE GOBE: "You Must Marry Your Wife’s Corpse"

Hours after the birth of her twin girls, Margaret Emmanuel gave up the ghost, leaving her husband with the twins and their three grown-up siblings. To make matters worse, Margaret’s family in Ebonyin are demanding that Emmanuel fulfills a vital aspect of their culture before the burial ceremonies even commence.

At first it was congratulations and celebration galore as Madam Margaret Emmanuel was delivered of a set of beautiful twin girls. But few hours after, the joyful mood turned sour and mourning took over, as news filtered in that mother of the twins had passed on.

She gave up the ghost on her way to the hospital...

Living the twins behind without the very vital motherly care. It also marked the beginning of the trauma of her husband and father of the twins, Mr. Adejo Emmanuel. Aside being shattered by the news, he was suddenly faced with a somewhat insurmountable challenge of weaning two infants alone. But the trauma did not end there, only Emmanuel didn’t know at this point in time.

Lamenting his predicament, Emmanuel said, “My life is like a balloon that was punctured with a pin, which immediately deflated it of all the joy. When a woman is pregnant the prayer is to hear the babies’ cries and that of the mother’s joy; but now the mother is gone, leaving the babies,” Emmanuel said, sobbing.

That was the story of the Emmanuel family last December 21. As if the agony was not enough, the deceased’s family members sent a message to the husband that he has to obey their custom and tradition by performing certain rituals and rites. Chief amongst these rights includes performing the mandatory marriage ceremonies with the deceased wife, an activity the couple had failed to perform while the late Margaret was alive. Without that, they told him that he is barred from coming to his wife’s village in Akenze, Ebonyin State, let alone, burying the corpse.

Emmanuel, a peasant farmer in his mid-50s is thus being called upon to go through wedding ceremonies with his late wife’s corpse. Coming from Emmanuel’s Igala ethnic background, this is rather bizarre and unimaginable. He lamented, “I don’t know what went wrong and I don’t know my sin. Like any other fellow Christian, when everybody was preparing for Christmas, I was preparing as well, both for a merry Christmas, safe delivery for my wife and a successful naming ceremony for the babies; not knowing that I had another thing coming.”

Late Margaret’s last moment
Narrating his wife’s last moment, Emmanuel said he suddenly saw his wife at Ugbagbo farm in Owo, where he was working unannounced. “When I saw her, I scolded her and asked why she came all the way to the farm, because she was already heavy and ready to deliver. I also asked why she did not go to the hospital instead of coming to the farm to meet me. Of course, this was not her first pregnancy, as she had previously had four children before this pregnancy.

"To compound matters, there was no vehicle to take her back to town that evening. We therefore waited till the second day. However she went into labour in between and was delivered of the twin girls. She was attended to by Traditional Birth Attendants, but the placenta did not come out. We quickly got her into a vehicle and headed for the General Hospital at Oke-Ogun in Owo. Unfortunately she did not make it, as she gave up the ghost at the entrance of the hospital. I noticed that her condition had worsened and she was getting dizzy. She thus got to the hospital, dead. To say the least, I was devastated. I became confused and almost ran mad. The nurses, who knew her, were surprised that she went to the farm instead of the hospital. She was well known at the hospital, because that was where she had all her children. She had also attended antenatal there.”

Twins under custody
Honourable Segun Obasekola, a Councillorship aspirant in Igboroko Nla Street, Owo and landlord of No 44, Igboroko Nla Street, where the family resides, said he pitied the man, Emmanuel for losing his wife at childbirth: “When they approached me for a room and I discovered they had no money, I have no choice but to allow them use the room free-of-charge. I did not know anyone of them, but as a community leader and a man with milk of kindness, I think this is one way I can render help. Here a Good Samaritan, Mrs. Femisola Akilamilo is taking care of the twins. Mrs. Akinlamilo, a prophetess who is also called Mother of Children (Iya Ewe) in her Cherubim and Seraphim Church.”

When The Nation got to 44, Igboroko Nla Street, the woman and the babies were found in a room, where she takes care of them.

Speaking, the twins’ guardian Madam Akinlamilo said she was called by a church member to come and assist the motherless children who had just been delivered. She said: “My cell phone just rang last December 23 (2015), and a friend broke the news that a mother of twins had just died and there was nobody to take care of them. She added that since I am a mother of kids in the church, I should try and assist in taking care of the babies. He also said I would be given stipends. So I obliged. I am a widow, I have four children and my last child is 11 years old. Since I am not under any man’s roof, I gladly accepted the role of a guardian, as God sent me.”

Asked if she breast-feeds the babies, the woman declared in a touching voice, “There is no milk in my breasts anymore, but the nurses and doctors have recommended their food (SMA). They consume a tin of the baby food within three days, but their father is a poor farmer; so when I ran out of their food, I went to Alhaji Jamiu Ekungba, a gubernatorial aspirant in Ondo State and narrated the story to him in order to solicit his to assistance. I also met one Mr. Jide Tububo, who advised me to go to the press and do the necessary legal papers, for I was ignorant of all such stuff. As I speak, we have no food to give them today, because they have exhausted what we had in stock.”

Asked whether she had intimated the welfare office or the police that she is in custody of the babies, Mrs. Akinlamilo became a bit jittery and said, “I am ignorant of that. I am just acting as a Good Samaritan; I don’t know that I should report to the Welfare Office or the police. Please can you enlighten me more to avoid any problems,” she pleaded with this reporter. Mrs. Akinlamilo said she is appealing to the state government and NGOs to come to the twins’ aide.”

In the course of this discussion, Emmanuel, father of the twins came in with a tin of SMA baby food. He announced with relish that he just bought one tin from the money given to him.

Many rivers to cross
Now the corpse of the late Margaret has been deposited at the mortuary while preparation is on the way to go to Akenze in Ebonyi State to officially announce the news of his wife’s demise and also perform the necessary rituals and rites. But there still is a snag. Emmanuel has no money.

He said: “The family of my late wife have asked me to come and do marriage ceremonies h my wife and come up with the sum of 350,000 naira before anything could even take off. Where would I get the money from? I am confused. They should pity my condition and understand that I’m still taking care of her four children. Three of them are in secondary school, not to talk of the twins,” he said.

So while Margaret’s corpse lies in the mortuary, Emmanuel is confused and disturbed, as he is facing three hurdles: “I have no money to pay for the mortuary; I also have no money to feed the children; and my in-laws are demanding for the death certificate of their daughter, which they say I must bring along whenever I am coming. They also say it is compulsory for me to come over and do a compulsory marriage with her before she could be buried. They say some rituals must be performed and 350,000 naira must be paid to her family as part of her bride-price, before talking about the burial at all. Where do I get the money from? Am I not in trouble now?”

According to Emmanuel, his in-laws don’t even want to entertain or listen to any excuse or explanation; all they care about is for him to fulfil all the necessary requirements.

Asked how he met his wife, Emmanuel replied that, “You can meet your wife anywhere, so far there is love and the woman agrees to marry you. I am from Idah in Igala, Kogi State, and we met here in Owo, Ondo State. I never knew this is what I would face.”

Nothing but the truth!! Someone Is Worried About The Agege Bread Girl, Olajumoke

Nothing but the truth!! Someone Is Worried About The Agege Bread Girl, Olajumoke

At the risk of sounding like a hater...here's a strong warning message to 'Olajumoke' the bread seller.

Written by Ayo Shonaiya

At the risk of sounding like a hater, I am genuinely nervous as I read and watch this amazing story of a bread seller, who unknowingly strolls into a Tinie Tempah photoshoot, caught the eye of photographer TY Bello, and almost overnight becomes a global talking point.

I must say also, that I absolutely love it. This type of story gladdens everyone's heart and serves as inspiration to millions of people that despite your current situation, your good fortune is just round the corner and never lose hope in life.

But, I can't help but look beyond the fairytale and feel a sense of apprehension at the same time.

In my line of work, my job is to look where no one else is looking when it comes to negotiating contracts, maximising earning potential for talent, and pretty much protect such talent, and I pray to God there's someone doing that for this girl.

I have discovered and developed raw talent in my time, some from unknown status to superstardom. I have met others half way in their progression and developed together, but one thing I've never done is base anything on sentiment or "eeeyah", or "Na only Baba God o..." etc, I am sometimes the one to bring up the unpleasant reality, the reality no one understands until years later. But I always feel it's best to understand the whole picture and be prepared for whatever happens next.

When I saw that this Olajumoke girl couldn't even speak or read English, my first concern was she's going to be bewildered by a lot of things, especially in the fashion and modelling world in Nigeria. Then the sudden fame and spotlight, which often times can confuse 'experienced' talent. There's also the clamour for her time, makeovers, interviews, and of course the good stuff, endorsements, jobs, goodwill offers and donations (I hear she has 2 kids already).

I've seen her take pictures, holding up a Contract (which I hope has been explained to her well as she can't read it), then the makeovers with heavy make up and lipstick (she looks nothing like the sweet girl we all fell in love with). Forgive me I'm not a designer o, seeing her dressed in some shine shine outfits, I start to wonder, firstly I hope she's getting paid well at least, and secondly, most people are only absorbing her story, as most of us don't really know much about characteristics that suggest a great modelling career.

I really do hope and pray that, whatever happens to Olajumoke from now on, she is well protected. The fashion and modelling industry (in Nigeria or anywhere in the world) can be the worst place you wanna be when "they" decide you're no longer happening or trending, or worse, not useful anymore. You wanna bet that some other models are already beefing her already?

And another thing, when the same people who are "tapping into her anointing" now, start to write really disgusting and hurtful comments about her (anonymously of course) on blogs because her own is now getting too much, I hope she has a strong support system in the people that really love and care for her. But for now, Olajumoke ride on and God bless you.

Anyway, that's my own. Me too I need to go and sell my proverbial bread in the market.

Men of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command on Wednesday, February 10, arrested Lanrewaju Jaiyeola who claimed to be mentally unstable. Items discovered with him includes 22 ATM credit cards, 2 mobile phones, bank tellers and power bank.

The 39-year-old man was nabbed by the operatives along Ozumba Nbadiwe Road, Victoria Island, Lagos, when he was seen carrying a backpack and behaving suspiciously.

"When we sighted him, he appeared like a mentally sick man but we invited him for interrogation, he answered and responded normal to all our enquiries" on e of the officers said".

"Afterwards, he started straying from the normal course of our enquiries. This raised further curiosity and we decided to check out his backpack. What we found was startling; 22 assorted credit cards, 1 Nokia phone with flat battery, a blackberry, a power bank, several bank tellers of recent bank transactions, and lots of invoices amidst numerous pieces of papers.

"On further scrutiny, we discovered that eight of the credit cards were still valid. Out of these; three would expire in 2018, another three would expire in 2017 while two would expire in 2016. All the credit cards bore different names and banks." he added.

During interrogation at the RRS Headquarters in Alausa, the suspect suddenly began to sound irrational and even threatened the investigative officer.

"Initially, we noticed that he was mentally balanced because he was answering the questions posted to him adequately. But all of a sudden, he started to sound incoherent and illogical again,"

"He said 'I will make life unbearable for you if you don’t let me go'. It was at this point we realised that possibly he might be enjoying the patronage of some highly placed people whom we believe he might working for,"

The suspect has been transferred to Special Anti-Robbery Squad where he is expected to be subjected to further investigations and psychiatric examinations.

SAD STORY OF 22-YEAR-OLD GRADUATE HER FIANCÉ MURDERED IN HOTEL ROOM

From Chris Anucha, Port Harcourt

THE gruesome murder of 22-year-old Precious Naza Onyenanu, who graduated last year from Imo State University with a degree in Education (Economics), has given her traumatized father, Mr. Innocent Eze Onyenanu and other relations the greatest shock of their lives.

He still shudders every time the thought flashes in his mind and his tears have also not ceased to flow.

Precious, a native of Isu, in Isu Local Government Area of Imo State was allegedly butchered by Ephraim Isom, 27, a graduate of Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RUST), who hails from Andoni Local Government Area in Rivers State. The heinous murder took place in a hotel in the Rukpokwu area of Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

Precious met Ephraim in 2012, when he was posted to Imo State for the national youth service and they fell in love. After his national youth service year ended, Ephraim maintained his relationship with Precious, in the hope of eventually going into marriage after the victim’s graduation. But that, as it has turned out was just a ruse and dummy sold by Ephraim to Precious, to string her along. Innocently, and being a young woman as she was, Precious believed him hook, line and sinker.

Rather than formalizing the marriage, exchange rings and marriage vows, what Precious got was unkindest and deadliest cut that ended her life, from the young man she once called, “my darling.”

Homicide carefully planned and executed

The road that led to the tragic end of Precious began when her father asked her to travel to Port Harcourt to escort her sister, Mrs Ezinne Blessing Godswill, to Imo State, to spend the 2015 yuletide with the family. Presumably seeing the trip to Port Harcourt as an opportunity to see and spend some time with Ephraim, she excitedly called him and intimated him about the planned visit to the Garden City. On Saturday, December 5, she left for Port Harcourt, with absolutely no premonition of the evil fate that Ephraim had carefully scripted for her.

Unknown to her, Ephraim who had professed undying love for her, was also secretly nursing an evil plan against her, and looking for an opportunity to execute it. Pretending that all was well, the suspect booked a room in a hotel (name withheld) at Rukpokwu about 7 am and left. He was said to have called Precious on the phone, and told her of the hotel where she would stay and the bus-stop she should alight after arriving in Port Harcourt.

With grief laden in his heart, Precious’ father made a manly effort to recount to Sunday Sun reporter how the daughter came to a horrific end: “On Saturday, December 5, 2015, I sent my daughter to Port Harcourt, to bring her sister from Port Harcourt, to Imo State. She left Owerri about 7am. About 12.30, I tried to call her on the phone, to know if she got to Port Harcourt safely, but her phone was switched off. I tried all through the night, but the call did not go through.”

The 67-year-old businessman disclosed that when the phone eventually went through the following day, Sunday, December 6, 2015, it was a male voice that responded.

His words: “About 12:30, the following day, Sunday, December 6, 2015, the phone rang and it was a male voice that spoke. Just before I could ask him about the owner of the handset, he quickly switched off.”

At that point, Onyenanu said he became afraid and concluded that his daughter had been kidnapped. He said he rushed to the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Imo State Police Command, Owerri, to lodge a complaint. And when he went back to the Command the following day, Monday, December 7, 2015, for necessary documentation, Precious was declared missing by the police. The Imo State Police Command was said to have investigated the case throughout the week, but all efforts to unravel the mystery surrounding the sudden disappearance of the girl proved abortive.

But on Monday, December 14, while at the Imo Police Command, the distraught father said he received a phone call from his brother-in-law living in Port Harcourt, Ifeanyi Nmezi, who told him to rush to Port Harcourt, adding that his daughter had been murdered. In his confused state, Eze went to Port Harcourt and joined his daughter, Ezinne, at the Homicide Section, where she had already written a statement in respect of the murdered Precious.

Detectives in Rivers swing into action

In the course of the investigation, policemen attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Rivers State Police Command approached one of the GSM service providers and obtained the call log with a view to knowing the last person she communicated with before her gruesome murder. With the information provided by the GSM network company, the police identified the person who spoke to Precious last and also sent a Short Message Service, SMS to her, describing the bus stop where she should alight and the name of the hotel where they would lodge. The policemen later traced the suspect, arrested and detained him. After initial interrogation, the detectives took the detained suspect the following day to his house where they conducted a search. And in his house, two handsets belonging to the victim were found.

Father of the victim takes up the tale: “When the police found the two handsets, I was invited to come for identification. It was our housemaid, Chiamaka, who knows the handsets used by my daughter that identified the phones.”

But in an effort to cover the alleged crime, Ephraim deleted all the contacts in the handsets, which he also claimed belonged to him. To further confirm the real owner of the handsets, the police took them to the service provider, who restored the deleted contacts and call log.

“It was after the contacts were restored that the police saw the SMS Ephraim sent to my daughter, telling her the bus stop to alight at Rukpokwu,” Onyenanu further said.

ROLE OF HOTEL MANAGEMENT

According to the account of the management of the hotel, the suspect came to book a room on the fateful day at 7am. After paying, he locked it up and went away with the key. About 10am, he came back in the company of Precious.

“After sometime, two of them went out and later came back, holding food in take-away packs they bought from one of the eateries,” a source at the hotel told Sunday Sun.
It was also gathered that after sometime, too, the suspect went out again without Precious. But the director of the hotel felt uncomfortable and suspicious of the movement of the man. He asked him if he was checking out and also asked about the girl he took into the room he had booked.

But Ephraim lied to him, claiming that Precious was sleeping, and added that he wanted to buy something and then come back soon.

“Not satisfied with his response, the director asked the manager to call the suspect back. But he (Ephraim) was able to play a fast one on the manager and disappeared. He never came back to the hotel again,” the source further disclosed.

The hotel workers then went to knock on the door of the room but there was no response. After banging on the door repeatedly without any response, they peeped through a hole and saw the victim’s lifeless body on the bed, wrapped with bed sheet and in a pool of blood. It was after the discovery that the management of the hotel reported the matter to a nearby police station. A team of policemen went to the hotel, forced the door open and removed the body to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) mortuary.

Promptly, the police arrested and detained the director, manager and security men. When interrogated, they denied any involvement or knowledge of the crime, but assured that they would identify the customer, who booked the hotel and brought in the victim.

FAMILY DEVASTATED BY THE MURDER OF PRECIOUS

Expectedly, the murder of the young graduate devastated her family, especially her mother, Florence. According to Onyenanu, Precious, who was the last but one child in the family lacked nothing as her elderly ones and parents, provided for her needs.

He said: “I don’t know how her mother will survive this tragedy; they were too close. Out of my 14 children, she was the 13th. I have two wives. The older children pampered her a lot because of her good character and beauty. My daughter was very beautiful and fashionable. Anybody that came in contact with her liked her.”

Asked whether his daughter and her fiancé had any quarrel which could have led to the dastardly act, the grieving father disclosed to the reporter how one of his daughters told him that Precious had misunderstanding with Ephraim, after someone called him (Ephraim) on the phone one day, and Precious picked the call and the person turned out to be his girlfriend. The incident was said to have angered Precious, who accused the suspect of planning to jilt (dump) her.

“Also, who knows whether my daughter told him about her plans to travel to UK this year for her master’s degree programme? I’m calling on the Federal Government, the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase, women lawyers, human rights activists, to come to my aid. All I want is justice,” the grief-stricken father moaned

WHY LASSA FEVER PERSISTS IN NIGERIA –PROF. AGBONLAHOR

WHY LASSA FEVER PERSISTS IN NIGERIA –PROF. AGBONLAHOR

Why Lassa fever persists in Nigeria –Prof. Agbonlahor

From Tony Osauzo, Benin

Professor of Microbiology and former Vice-Chancellor of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Prof. Dennis Agbonlahor, has expressed displeasure with the country’s approach to fighting the deadly Lassa fever, describing the method adopted as “annual recurrent budget of death for the poor people in Nigeria.”

Delivering the Distinguished Lecture of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), with the title, “Combating Lassa Fever: a National Health Challenge”, Prof.Agbonlahor said it was sad that for the past 47 years, Nigeria had hitherto made noise in the name of creating awareness during outbreaks but goes to sleep at the end of each episode and only wakes up when the next outbreak occurs.

Quoting from a statement he credited to Prof. Oyewole Tomori, he said: “We are not aware of any report on cases of Lassa fever and its endemicity in other continents of the world. This perhaps explains why governments in the developed countries show little or no interest or financial commitment to Lassa fever eradication. They look at the disease as a regional problem, which is mainly endemic in West Africa.

“Despite the thousands of deaths from the fever, Nigeria is still unprepared to contain the disease, waking up every year an outbreak is reported, running like a decapitated chicken in any direction and forgetting about the disease till another year of another outbreak.”

He therefore, advocated accurate epidemiological data on the distribution, rodent typing and rodents’ Lassa viral carriage according to geopolitical zones and states in Nigeria in order for the disease to be effectively tackled.

Professor Agbonlahor lauded President Muhammadu Buhari for inaugurating the national committee on the control and prevention of haemorrhagic fever and other infectious disease outbreaks in Nigeria, which is chaired by Prof. Oyewole Tomori.

“This is a step in the right direction as the government now appears serious and willing to listen and provide the necessary logistic support aimed at controlling the scourge of Lassa fever in Nigeria,” he said.

In his opening remarks, the Vice Chancellor of the UNIBEN, Prof. Faraday Orumwense, said the institution has taken the challenge to join the fight against Lassa fever.

He disclosed that the authorities of the institution had set up a committee to sensitize the university community on ways to prevent the disease and to collaborate with the government and the NGOs on ways to eradicate it.

President Buhari Urges Nigerians To Emulate Murtala Muhammed

President Buhari Urges Nigerians To Emulate Murtala Muhammed

President Mohammadu Buhari, yesterday, urged Nigerians to emulate the life of the late former Head of State, General Murtala Muhammed who according to him wanted the best for  Nigeria.

He was speaking at the 40th Memorial Lecture held in honour of the late head of state

He said: “On assuming the role of Head of State in 1975, Murtala set out with a single-minded determination seldom seen in Nigerian leadership. Decisions were on fast-track. Two major developments were prominent among his legacies: the move of the capital to Abuja from Lagos; and the creations of seven new States to make 19. The shadow of his death still somewhat hangs over Nigeria.

“On the 13th of February 1976, Nigeria suffered a grievous blow with the assassination of Murtala Muhammad in a failed coup d’état. The country mourned, and rightly so, because Murtala had been on his way to putting Nigeria back to the path of order and discipline, after years of drift, corruption and near despair. It would not be over-stating the case to say that Nigeria lost its newly-found momentum with Murtala’s demise.

“His life, short though it proved to be, was marked by an extraordinary passion, energy and determination to do better, and to make Nigeria better. These are values that young and old alike should all remember – and celebrate.”

“By the time Murtala was given Command during the Civil War, the Federal side was on the defensive. The rebels had over-ran the then Mid-West, and reached as far as Ore, just 100 miles from Lagos. By dint of sheer bravery, improvisation and resourcefulness, he mustered a rag-tag group of soldiers, integrated them into an entirely new division, knocked them into fighting shape, recovered Mid-West and ventured across the Niger. Alas, there were terrible casualties on both sides.

“But Murtala’s motto was to get the job done as quickly as possible; sacrifice and loss were part of the risks of war. Relations between Murtala and some other senior officers were not always easy. But no one could doubt his inspirational qualities or call into question his love and dedication in the service of Nigeria.

The vulture and the little girl

Rare Historical Photos

And the story behind them…

The vulture and the little girl

The vulture and the little girl, 1993

The vulture is waiting for the girl to die and to eat her. The photograph was taken by South African photojournalist, Kevin Carter, while on assignment to Sudan. He took his own life a couple of month later due to depression.

“The parents of the children were busy taking food from the plane, so they had left their children only briefly while they collected the food. This was the situation for the girl in the photo taken by Carter. A vulture landed behind the girl. To get the two in focus, Carter approached the scene very slowly so as not to scare the vulture away and took a photo from approximately 10 meters. He took a few more photos before chasing the bird away.”

In 1994, South African photojournalist Kevin Carter won the Pulitzer prize for his disturbing photograph of a Sudanese child being stalked by a vulture. That same year, Kevin Carter committed suicide.

Without the facts surrounding his death, this behavior may seem surprising. But Carter received heaps of criticism for his actions. While in Sudan, near the village of Ayod, Carter found a small, emaciated toddler struggling to make her way to the food station. When she stopped to rest, a vulture landed nearby with his eyes on the little girl. Carter took twenty minutes to take the photo, wanting the best shot possible, before chasing the bird away.

The photo was published in The New York Times in March of 1993, and sparked a wide reaction. People wanted to know what happened the child, and if Carter had assisted her. The Times issued a statement saying that the girl was able to make it to the food station, but beyond that no one knows what happened to her. Because of this, Carter was bombarded with questions about why he did not help the girl, and only used her to take a photograph.

However, Carter was working in a time when photojournalists were told not to touch famine victims for fear of spreading disease. Carter estimated that there were twenty people per hour dying at the food center. The child was not unique. Regardless, Carter often expressed regret that he had not done anything to help the girl, even though there was not much that he could have done, in all actuality.

This was his suicide note; very depressing:

“I am depressed … without phone … money for rent … money for child support … money for debts … money!!! … I am haunted by the vivid memories of killings and corpses and anger and pain … of starving or wounded children, of trigger-happy madmen, often police, of killer executioners … I have gone to join Ken [recently deceased colleague Ken Oosterbroek] if I am that lucky.”

The suicide: On 27 July 1994 Carter drove to the Braamfontein Spruit river, near the Field and Study Center, an area where he used to play as a child, and took his own life by taping one end of a hose to his pickup truck’s exhaust pipe and running the other end to the passenger-side window. He died of carbon monoxide poisoning, aged 33

Revealed: Rtd Air Chief, Amosu Buried $1m Loot in Soak Away Pit

Revealed: Rtd Air Chief, Amosu Buried $1m Loot in Soak Away PiTamosun

*$1 million recovered in soak away, N3bn traced to wife’s accounts

A retired army chief, Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Adesola Amosu (rtd), have been discovered to hide his loot in the soak away pit in his house.

Investigations by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), also revealed that his wife, Mrs. Lara Amosu was picked up by the EFCC operatives last week in Abuja.

According to New Telegraph, Mrs. Amosu’s arrest followed the alleged discovery of about N3 billion in her bank accounts. She was allegedly holding the money in trust for her husband.

Other properties traced to the former CAS were also being held in the names of his wife and children.

Mrs Amosun has been in the custody of the EFCC in Lagos for the past one week. It was learnt that her lawyer has been battling without success to get her released.

Amosu was arrested two weeks ago by the EFCC over his involvement in the arms scandal. Shortly after Amosu was picked up in Abuja, his wife, Lara, was subsequently arrested.

Investigations conducted showed that some of the monies the former Chief of Air Staff made through some contracts and procurements in NAF were traced to his wife’s accounts.

A source familiar with the investigation told New Telegraph that N13 billion was traced to the bank accounts of a wife of a retired Air Vice Marshal, who held strategic position in the Nigeria Air Force (NAF).

In the bank accounts of another wife of a serving senior officer, N1.5 billion was found. New Telegraph learnt that the officers handled the finance, budget and accounts of NAF.

“About N3 billion was traced to the wife’s accounts while some assets acquired by the former service chief was in her name and some others in her company’s name.

“So, Lara is an accessory to a crime. The proceeds with her are from the arms funds. As we prosecute her husband, she must also be held accountable,” a source told New Telegraph.

New Telegraph had reported that the EFCC discovered N17.5 billion in the accounts of wives of three Airforce chiefs. The monies were scattered in various banks accounts.

It was further learnt that the wife of Air Vice Marshal J.B. Adigun, Chief of Account and Budget of NAF, has travelled out of the country two weeks ago, shortly after the arrest of her husband. The hurried trip was said to have become necessary in the face of the arms probe.

Adigun has been indicted by the presidential arms panel. He is in the EFCC custody. Several of his properties in Lagos and Abuja have been seized by the anti-graft agency. Billions of naira was said to have been traced to Adigun’s wife’s accounts.

New Telegraph has also learnt that the EFCC retrieved $1 million cash in Amosu’s residence in his residence in Badagary, Lagos. A source told New Telegraph that the money, in foreign currency, was retrieved when EFCC operatives carried out a search on Amosu’s residence in Badagry.

According to the source: “In continuation of the investigation into the arms probe, the EFCC operatives took Amosu to his residence in Badagry. After a thorough search of the residence, a fresh small ‘soakaway’ pit was discovered in the compound. The operatives suspected foul play, which informed the breaking of the ‘soakaway’. Surprisingly, $1 million was found in it. The money was subsequently confiscated.”

New Telegraph also learnt that Air Commodore Akinwale (rtd) who manages the St. Solomon Health Care Limited, an ultra-modern diagnostic centre owned by Amosu, along Adeniyi Jones Avenue in Ikeja, Lagos is still in the custody of the EFCC. The retired Airforce officer oversees the medical centre on behalf of Amosu.

The diagnostic centre has been sealed off by the anti-graft agency. Meanwhile, the EFCC is still keeping Amosu, Adigun, and Air Commodore O. Gbadebo in Lagos.

A source said that the anti-graft agency has been taking the indicted officers to assets traced to them, considered to have been acquired through funds illegally realised from the arms procurement. Some of the identified properties have been sealed off.

Amosu, Adigun and Gbadebo were arrested two weeks ago in Abuja. Impeccable sources told New Telegraph that the trio were flown into Lagos in an Airforce aircraft on a Sunday and discreetly kept in a hotel.

The arrest and interrogation of Amosu is coming after New Telegraph had exclusively reported in the November 30, 2015 edition, that the Federal Government had directed the EFCC to prosecute the ex-CAS.

Amosu, Adigun, Gbadebo and other indicted officers are being investigated over 10 NAF contracts totalling $930,500,690 awarded to Societe D’ Equipments Internationaux (SEI) Nig Ltd. between January 2014 and February 2015.

The award letters, according to the arms probe panel, contained misleading delivery dates, suggesting fraudulent intent in the award process.

Operatives are also grilling the ex-chief of army staff and the two senior officers over the procurement of two used Mi-24V Helicopters instead of the recommended Mi- 35M series at the cost of $136,944,000. The helicopters were discovered to be excessively priced and not operationally airworthy at the time of delivery.

The arms probe panel established that a brand new unit of Mi-24V Helicopter goes for about $30 million. The helicopters were delivered without rotor blades and upgrade accessories.

The three of them are also being grilled over the procurement of four used Alpha-Jets for the NAF at the cost of $7,180,000. Whereas NAF paid for four used Alpha-Jets, the panel confirmed that only two of the Alpha-Jet aircraft were ferried to Nigeria after cannibalisation of engines from the NAF fleet.

They are also being investigated in the procurement of 36D6 Low Level Air Defence Radar for NAF, which was awarded to GAT Techno Dynamics Ltd in April 2014 at the cost of $33 million under his watch.

The arms panel averred that the radars were excessively priced as a complete set of such radars goes for $6 million.

Acting on the recommendations made by the 13-man presidential committee auditing arms procurement between 2007 and 2015, President Muhammadu Buhari, had ordered the EFCC to conduct further investigation on the indictment of Amosu, former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh (rtd); Air Marshal M.D. Umar (Rtd), Maj- Gen. ER Chioba (Rtd), AVM I.A. Balogun (Rtd), AVM A.G. Tsakr (Rtd), AVM A.G. Idowu (Rtd), AVM AM Mamu, AVM O.T Oguntoyinbo, and AVM T Omenyi. Others were: AVM J.B. Adigun, AVM R.A. Ojuawo, AVM JA Kayode-Beckley, Air Cdre S.A. Yushau (Rtd), Air Cdre A.O. Ogunjobi, Air Cdre G.M.D. Gwani, Air Cdre SO Makinde, Air Cdre A.Y. Lassa, Col. N. Ashinze and Lt Col. M.S. Dasuki (Rtd). Badeh had been in the custody of EFCC since Monday. Over N29 billion and $2 billion had been expended on the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) procurement activities alone between 2007 and 2015.

Similarly, the Nigerian Army has announced that it has sent names of 12 top officers to EFCC for investigation and possible prosecution.

They comprise of “3 serving Major Generals, and one retired, 3 Brigadier Generals, 4 Colonels and 1 Lieutenant Colonel,” Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman, said. He disclosed in a statement that “at the end of the Commission’s investigations those found culpable will be tried by a Military Court Martial.”

Col. Usman did not disclose the names of those involved

EXPOSED: Banks In Multi-Million-Dollar Racketeering

EXPOSED: Banks In Multi-Million-Dollar Racketeering

Commercial banks in the country are raking in millions of dollars from a foreign exchange racketeering which has been fuelled by the acute shortage of hard currency in the economy, investigation by PUNCH has revealed.

The Central Bank of Nigeria has been rationing forex to prospective importers in the past 16 months, after the global fall in the prices of crude oil, the nation’s main forex earner.

The situation is getting worse as tens of thousands of applications for forex by intending importers have been kept on hold by the CBN for months.

Sources close to the forex racketeering said

the dollar shortage had led to a situation where prospective importers apply to the CBN through their banks for forex for months without getting it.

The continued acute scarcity, it was learnt, had been capitalised upon by the commercial banks who are now selling several millions of dollars obtained from the CBN on their clients’ names at huge premiums above the N199 to $1 official rate approved by the central bank.

According to sources familiar with the situation, thousands of helpless importers who are in desperate need of forex to import products ranging from raw materials to equipment are milked on weekly basis by the greedy banks.

Findings showed that the scheme, which has been on for several months as the forex scarcity worsens by the day, has made many top bank executives multi-millionaires overnight.

Out of $10m to $25m (depending on the volume of demand by its customers) sold by the CBN to commercial banks in some weeks, illegal profit to the tune of $5m could be made by each of the banks involved in the forex racketeering.

A prospective importer, who was recently approached by a major bank in the country involved in the forex racketeering, told our correspondent that many importers had no choice but to buy the scarce forex from the banks despite the huge and illegal premiums being made by them.

Narrating his ordeal to PUNCH, the importer, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, for fear of being victimised by the bank, said, “We need $295,000 to import some equipment. We have been on the so-called CBN queue since October. The bank said no forex. Recently, the bank called us that there was forex but not at the official rate. They wanted to sell to us at N275 to $1. Out of about N81m we are to pay, only about N59m goes to the CBN, which is the official rate. The balance goes to the bank officials who get this allocation from the CBN. This is the type of stupid money they make now, God saves Nigeria.”

Explaining further, the visibly angry importer said, “The bank’s officials said they had $5m as of January 29. So calculate how much they made for that week alone.”

The forex racketeering victim said the bank officials had told him that the difference between the CBN rate of N199/$1 and the N275 to the dollar rate they were offering him would be paid through a cheque written on a name to be provided by the officials.

He added, “The bank will debit my account at the CBN rate and then I will give them a cheque for the balance.”

Another importer, who shared a similar experience, said his own bank offered a deal of N285 per dollar.

Further findings revealed that commercial banks were carrying out the forex racketeering through various means depending on the method through which a prospective importer is planning to make payment to its prospective supplier overseas.

Normally, payments are made for imported goods through open accounts, Letters of Credit, and Bills for Collection.

For items that are not valid for forex (i.e items the CBN has excluded from the list of items it provides forex for), payments are usually made through open accounts.

Letters of Credit (a kind of guarantee for payment) are usually written by Nigerian banks to their correspondent banks overseas on behalf of an importer, while Bills for Collection involve a situation where the supplier releases the goods to the importer and payments are made later. In any of the latter two cases, importers or companies are required to get forex from the CBN which will be transferred into the bank accounts of their suppliers overseas by their commercial banks in Nigeria.

It was learnt that a whole lot of forex racketeering involving opening bank accounts overseas by bank officials and importers alike was now in place.

When contacted, the CBN Director of Corporate Communications, Mr. Ibrahim Mu’azu, said there was the need for aggrieved customers and importers to lodge a formal complaints with the CBN over the matter, adding that this would enable the central bank to commence thorough investigation into the matter.

“The regulatory authority can only know when there are complaints. If there are complaints, the CBN will investigate and rescue the situation,” Mu’azu said.

But economic, financial experts and ex-bankers said the CBN and commercial banks were culpable, noting there was the need for the duo to introduce mechanism to arrest the huge fraud.

An economist and Chief Executive Officer, Cowry Assets Management Limited, Mr. Johnson Chukwu, said the CBN could be held responsible for the sharp practices.

Chukwu, who is a former banker, said, “Human beings are economic agents and they will always be tempted to follow the easy path. But the regulatory authority must not create the loophole for such. The premium between the official exchange rate and the parallel market rate is too much.”

An Economist and Head, Investment and Research, Afrinvest West Africa Limited, an investment bank and research firm, Mr. Ayodeji Ebo, also said there was the need for the CBN to come up with a policy to close the huge gap between the naira-dollar exchange rate on the parallel and official forex markets, adding that the difference would continue to breed round-tripping and all manner of unethical practices.

He added, “Commercial banks also need to strengthen their internal controls both at the head office level and branch levels. Most of these forex racketeerings are carried out only in some bank branches without the knowledge of the head office or even top officials at the branch level. So, the banks need to do something quickly about this.”

The Head, Investment Advisory, Sterling Capital, an investment bank, Mr. Sewa Wusu, believes the CBN is making efforts to stabilise the forex market, noting that issues coming in recent times would be addressed soon.

Meanwhile, the CBN has asked banks to start publishing their returns on the utilisation of the forex in the newspapers as part of the measures to check sharp practices in the forex market.

By Thursday, only seven banks had published their returns on utilisation of funds purchased from the CBN. So, what happened to all the Dollars and other currencies in possession of other banks?

OONI URGES NIGERIANS TO PATRONIZE LOCALLY MADE GOODS

OONI URGES NIGERIANS TO PATRONISE LOCALLY MADE GOODS   ooni-oba-adeyeye-enitan-ogunwusi.jpeg
Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has called on Nigerians to patronise locally home made goods.

The call is coming even as the monarch commissioned 7 coaster buses to ease inter-state transportation for the people of Ile-Ife and environs.

The traditional ruler also announced free treatment of ailments for the people of the ancient town.

Oba Ogunwusi while commissioning the Made-in-Nigeria coastal buses at his palace at Enuwa Square in Ile-Ife urged Nigerians to patronise locally made products.

He stressed that the present economic downturn battling Nigeria would be reduced should the citizens of the country started patronising products and goods produced locally.

The monarch said he decided to partner with Olofin Micro Finance Bank, Ile-Ife to purchase the vehicles in order to bring about economic growth of Ile-Ife and also ease transportation into and outside Ife town.

He urged the people of the town to make good use of the free healthcare care services saying that development cannot thrive in a town that dwells in health challenges.

Speaking, the Managing Director of Olofin Micro Finance Bank, Mr. Toyin Olufolahan disclosed that the buses cost N8 million each.

He said the bank decided to partner with the monarch in his bid to bring about economic transformation in Ile-Ife.

Olufolahan said the coastal buses would be assessed by cooperative societies and they would pay instalmentally within two years
