Two BASE jumpers drown in Big Sur tragedy

Two BASE jumpers drown in Big Sur tragedy

A BASE jumper who parachuted off a bridge overlooking the Pacific Ocean likely drowned, as did the man who heroically jumped in to try and save her, according to police.

The two thrill-seekers have been missing in the Big Sur area since Saturday morning.

Monterey County Sheriff's officials say a video from a helmet camera shows Mary Katherine 'Katie' Connell, of Ventura, descending nearly 300 feet and landing on Bixby Creek, which feeds into the Pacific.

Shortly after the landing, three large waves overtake her and she vanishes from view, presumably having been dragged out to sea.

Sheriff Steve Bernal says her companion, identified as a BASE jumping instructor from Finland, then leaped off the bridge to help her, reported the station KION.

While the male victim's name was being withheld by the authorities pending the notification of next of kin, it is believed that the man who attempted to save Katie Connell was Rami Kajala.

According to his Facebook page, Kajala, a Finnish national, was a BASE jumping instructor and flight suit designer who was friends with Ms Connell.

His final status update, dated January 13, featured more than a half-dozen photos of the young woman jumping from a cliff in Perris, California, in one of Kajala's custom-made 'tracking' suits.

According to his website and his social media postings, Kajala had been BASE jumping since 2003 and had 2,500 jumps to his name. In 2013, he started the company RavenBase.com, which manufactures and sells tracking suits designed to fly.

'BASE' is a term that stands for four categories of fixed objects from which one can jump: building, antenna, span and Earth. Practitioners of the extreme sport parachute or wingsuit-fly from man-made structures or cliffs.

In BASE jumping, tracking is a freefall technique in which jumpers assume a forward position that would take them away from the fix object, be it a cliff or a bridge, as they fall.

Kajala, who referred to himself as a 'master jedi tracker,' operated a BASE jumping school offering courses in the art of tracking.

Scientists say the Zika virus can also be spread through sex

Scientists say the Zika virus can also be spread through sex

As the devastating Zika virus rampages through the Caribbean and Latin America - and threatens to hit parts of the US such as Florida - more and more questions are being asked about how it can be transmitted.

The virus has been linked to birth defects in thousands of Brazilian babies, born with heads smaller than normal and undeveloped brains.

Symptoms include a rash, fever, conjunctivitis and headache and to date, 21 countries have been affected.

At the moment, there is clear scientific evidence the virus is transmitted by the same type of mosquito that spreads other tropical diseases, such as dengue fever, chikungunya and yellow fever.

But there are also fears the virus may be passed on through sex, following two reports in medical literature.

One states that Zika was found in the semen of a man from Tahiti, the other that the virus was passed from a husband to his wife after intercourse.

But is there really a risk?

In a statement issued this week, the World Health Organisation said there was still insufficient evidence to make the link.

But these research papers argue otherwise.

El-Zakzaky flown to France for treatment, back to Abuja

El-Zakzaky flown to France for treatment, back to Abuja

Abuja—The embattled leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, Sheikh Ibrahim El Zakzaky, was flown out of Nigeria for treatment of gun shot injuries he suffered during the encounter between his supporters and members of the Nigerian Army last year, multiple security sources told Vanguard in Abuja yesterday.

El-zakzaky

It will be recalled that during the bloody encounter between the Shiites and the Nigerian Army, several members of the sect were killed, while many others sustained various degrees of injuries with some still on admission at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Shika near Zaria.

The fracas occurred when members of the sect allegedly blocked the Zaria-Sokoto road and prevented the convoy of the Chief of Army staff from passing through, despite several entreaties.

Sheikh El-Zakzaky allegedly sustained several gun shot wounds, with some reports claiming that one of his eyes was affected during the encounter.

Since the clash between the sect and the military, his whereabouts have been shrouded in secrecy until Vanguard exclusively revealed that he was moved from Kaduna to a safe house in Abuja belonging to one of the security services.

Several security sources who are knowledgeable in the matter, however, revealed to Vanguard yesterday that due to the seriousness of the injuries the Shiite leader sustained, he was secretly flown to France by the Nigerian government some weeks ago for treatment before being returned to the country two weeks ago.

One of the sources said: “It is true that the federal government flew him out of the country for treatment. He was stabilized before he was brought back to Nigeria. The government did not want to take chances by keeping him in the country. We did not want a repeat of the incidenct with the late leader of the Boko Haram movement whose death in custody exacerbated the crisis in the North East.”

Another source explained that the decision to fly El Zakzaky out of the country followed intervention by highly placed Nigerians, including the .former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, and the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, who warned that allowing the Shiite leader to die in custody would have grave implications for the security of the country.

Spokesman of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, Ibrahim Musa, confirmed to Vanguard that members of the NSCIA committee confirmed to the IMN that their leader was alive, after being treated for gun shot injuries in France and was recuperating in Abuja

CNN’s Amampour: Rotimi Amaechi Allegedly Looted $757M (N70B) in US Foreign Accounts

On CNN’s Amanpour Live Report it was reported that Amaechi has been stacking money in different foreign accounts.

According to the statement, Amanpour’s show said “the sum of over 757 million U.S. dollars was stacked by Amaechi in a foreign U.S. Bancorp/Minnesota account.”

The Integrity Group, a non-governmental organization, has sent a petition to Buhari as well as the Economic Financial Crimes Commission chairman to investigate Amaechi for the over N70 billion stolen from the Rivers State government.

This amount is separate from the N21 billion which the PDP claims Amaechi transferred from the Power Assets proceeds account of Access bank to the accounts of three private companies with a 25 Trans-Amadi Road, Port Harcourt address.

Well, is he the one that Buhari’s camp is telling us that we will be shocked when the first looter is arrested?

Details later.

Titus Onwuchekwa, a Presbyterian Reverend, was recently paraded at the Lagos State Police Command, Ikeja, alongside 5 suspects, for armed robbery.
The arrest of two notorious armed robbery kingpins, Opeyemi Aregbesola and Bola Salami led to the arrest of one Osas Felix Bright and Chibuike Umeh. .
.
Felix and Chibike specialised in receiving stolen cars, changing the colour and re-registering the cars with forged custom duty documents before selling them. While reacting to his arrest, Rev. Titus Onwuchekwa, said: “I bought a Mitsubishi Pajero jeep from one Felix.
.
.
While negotiating, I told him that I was a man of God and he said that he would use the vehicle to sow a seed into my life. He said because I was a man of God, he would sell it to me for N500k. He said I should pray that God should bless him with more children because he had only had one child since he married.
.
.
He gave me the car documents which bore his name; he also gave me the custom clearing documents, and they had the same name too. A soldier friend of mine had to help me verify if the car was genuine and he confirmed that it was. I am a man of God and I will never buy a stolen property.”

Gov Wike Cries as Rivers PDP Leaders Decamp to APC; Says I Won't Go Down Alone

Gov Wike Cries as Rivers PDP Leaders Decamp to APC; Says I Won't Go Down Alone

MORE PDP HEAVYWEIGHTS DESERT WIKE, VOW TO DELIVER FOR APC

*Wike threatens not to go down alone as Nwankwo, Soberekon, Bekinbo Dagogo-Jack, Tobin-West formally collapse Rivers PDP

The camp of embattled Care-Taker Governor, Nyesome Wike, has become further depleted with the exit of more heavyweights of Rivers State Chapter of PDP. The latest in the ranks of Rivers PDP heavyweights who have recently defected to the APC include three frontline gubernatorial candidates, Chief (Captain) Sunday Nwankwo, Chief Bekinbo Soberekon and Engr. Bekinbo Dagogo-Jack, which were rigged out by Wike during the PDP primaries. Others include Dr. Diamond Tobin-West, Dr. Basoba Anga, Chief Tubonimi Wokoma, Hon. Daye Ojuka and Hon. Ibroma Kirchner

Kick-starting the formal burial of PDP in Rivers State was Chief (Captain) Nwankwo, the Etche-born, Port Harcourt-based billionaire and former National Presidential Committee Member of PDP.

The oil and gas czar dumped PDP and joined APC with thousands of his supporters at a colourful ceremony held at Mba in Etche LGA of the State. Addressing the huge crowd, Chief (Captain) Nwankwo said: “I was hitherto a financier of PDP and the backbone of the party in Mba clan but with the turn of events in the State, with Wike exhibiting inept leadership and lack of power to govern a complex State like Rivers State, I am hereby teaming up with my friend and brother, Dr. Dakuku Adol Peterside, and others that are interested in rebuilding the State in APC. I hereby promise to channel same resources to the victory of APC and all its candidates. I, therefore, urge all my supporters in the 23 LGAs of the State to cross over to APC and ensure the success of the party in all the re-run elections in the State.”

Receiving the decampees, Rivers APC guber candidate, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, reminded Etche people of the numerous roads he constructed in Etche LGA when he served as Commissioner for Works and promised to do more when he is sworn in as Governor of the State after the re-run elections.

Other APC stakeholders that witnessed the epochal event were Chief Allwell Onyesoh, former Commissioner and immediate past Chairman of Rivers State Post-Secondary Schools Board; Chief Nnamdi Okere, former Etche Council boss and immediate past Special Adviser to then-Governor Rotimi Ameachi; Chief Ogbonnah Nwuke, a re-run candidate for Etche/Omuma Federal Constituency; Hon. Golden Ben Chioma, a rerun candidate for the House of Assembly seat in Etche; Chief Okey Amadi, a former Commissioner under Amaechi; Chief Ambrose Igbokwe Nwuzi, former Commissioner; and Hon. Chidi Nweke, a former Commissioner of Agriculture, among others.

In a related development, this time in Buguma, veteran politician, Chief Bekinbo Soberekon, led Dr. Diamond Tobin-West, Dr. Basoba Anga, Chief Tubonimi Wokoma, Hon. Daye Ojuka and thousands of other PDP members in Kalabari Kingdom into APC. Rivers APC leader, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, was on hand to receive the decampees. Peterside, who thereafter received royal blessings from HRH Chief Vincent Fred, was accompanied by several APC chieftains, among them Rt. Hon. Amachree, the incoming Senator to represent the South West Senatorial Zone; and Dr. Dawari George, the APC candidate in the re-run election for Asari-Toru/Akuku Toru Federal Constituency.

As if the two events at Etche and Buguma were not enough damage to the burial of PDP, Akuku-Toru the home Local Government Area of Hon Dr Tammy Dangogo the immediate past Minister of Sports and Wike's strong man formally hammered the nails on the coffin of the dying PDP in Rivers State when in a carnival of praise and worship at Briggs Compound, New York City-Abonnema; the APC State Chairman, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya and His Excellency, incoming Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Hon. Barr. Asita Honourable received Engr. Bekinbo Dagogo-Jack, governorship aspirant of the PDP who led former Lawmaker, Hon. Ibroma Kirchner and hundreds of high profile defectors from PDP.

Rivers APC in a statement issued Sunday in Port Harcourt warmly welcomed the latest members of the party, congratulating them for taking the right decision at the right time. The statement condemned Wike’s threat to PDP stakeholders in reaction to the gale of defections to APC. Wike, according to reports, summoned PDP stakeholders, threatening to go down with all who may have benefited from his administration should he fail in the re-run election.

Wike reportedly said: 'I am worried over the incessant defection of many of my aides to APC in the State. Everybody is running away to APC and they expect me to stay calm and suffer the brunt alone. It will never happen. We were in it together and we must suffer together. If they say I stole money in the Ministry of Education, I didn’t eat it alone. All of you took part. Some of you built the almajiri schools, some built the unity schools, some supplied books, others supervised projects. I have my proofs. Today everybody is shouting Wike killed to get to power. Did I as a person kill any Rivers man? No. They were killed in your LGAs by your boys. Now all of you are planning to run to APC for protection...'

Rivers APC in the statement signed by the State Chairman, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya, strongly condemned Wike’s threat, describing it as the outburst of a drowning man. “Wike has seen nothing yet. He should be ready to answer for his misdeeds because there is always a day of retribution and you cannot sow the wind without reaping the whirlwind,” the party said.

Is your boyfriend or girlfriend marriage material? let them answer these 9 questions

Is your boyfriend or girlfriend marriage material? let them answer these 9 questions

For people who want their relationships to end in marriage you have to know if the one you are dating is marriage material

Couple talking  (Madame Noire)

A successful marriage is as a result of hard word from two committed people who are deeply in love with each other not just paying lip service.

Couple talking  (Shutterstock)

The best thing ever is to fall in-love over again with the person you were in love with when you exchanged vows. For people who want their relationships to end in marriage you have to know if the one you are dating is marriage material.

I got inspired and here are some questions your partner should answer confidently if they are really ready for that kind of commitment:

1. How will you prioritize us, before and after the children?

2. Will you continue to woo me after our marriage?

3. Why do you want to spend the rest of your life with me?

4. Will you constantly show me how much you love me?

5. How will you contribute to keeping us happy?

6. Will you promise to always communicate anything with me?

7. Why do you love me?

8. How will you be as a parent active or just a financial contributor?

9. How will you help us get through tough times together?

Your partner should be able to answer these questions boldly without difficulty.

8 signs you need to quit your relationship now

8 signs you need to quit your relationship now

When a relationship becomes unbearable due to certain unpleasant circumstances, then you might consider ending it.

                        Unhappy couple

People get into relationships with hope that it would last for a very long time, but that isn't always the case sometimes.

When a relationship becomes unbearable due to certain unpleasant circumstances, then you might consider ending it.

So how do you know when to quit a relationship that's not working? Here are eight signs you need to look out for:

1: Infidelity: While you may give your partner a second chance if they cheat on you, you may also need to consider letting them go when this becomes a regular occurence. The first time may be a mistake, but repeated acts of infidelity is inexcusable and you don't have to put up with such a person. Someone who hurts your feelings over and over again does not love you, so you need to let them go

2: Physical Abuse: If your partner hits you once, there's a chance it can happen again. Whether it happened when your partner was drunk or during a heated argument, this is a real cause for concern. You might decide to forgive and forget, but you will always live with that emotional scar. A person who has no emotional and physical restraints is a time bomb waiting to explode. Save yourself the trouble and end the relationship.

3: Negative Addiction: You cannot have a fruitful relationship with a person who is perpetually high on drugs or alcohol. Sooner or later, they'll drag you into their fuzzy world of addiction. A person who you cannot carry on a normal conversation with because their heads are always in the cloud, isn't worth your time.

4: Deception: A partner who tells lies every time is not someone that can be trusted. Of what use is your partner if you can never get a truthful response from them on simple matters? If you only hear the truth about something your partner did or said from other people, then it would be wise for you to drop this person before you drown in a sea of lies.

5: Poor Communication: One of the keys to a lasting relationship is communication. However, if you find yourself in a relationship where you and your partner hardly talk or have nothing to say to each other when you are together, something is terribly wrong. If you cannot carry on a normal discussion without resorting to arguments and fights, then you two will do better apart than together.

6: Disrespect: Respect is reciprocal - to receive it, you have to first give it. This has nothing to do with age, but more to do with courtesy. A relationship where the two people involved talk nasty to each other or treat one another like rivals, is one that needs to end. Note that respect comes naturally in a loving relationship. This means a lack of mutual respect in your relationship indicates a short supply of love.

7: You've Grown Apart: Perhaps the fire in your relationship has died down after years of being together. There's still a chance of revival in this kind of situation - take a trip together, do the exciting things that made your relationship fun in the past or go for counselling. If none of these works, then it's possible you two are tired of the relationship or simply grown apart. At this point, it's fine to start considering a breakup.

8: It's All About Sex: If all you and your partner get into is sex, sex and more sex, there's a major problem. Do you only connect when you're in bed? Does your conversation only revolves around sex? Obviously, this is a Friends With Benefits (FWB) arrangement. This kind of relationship lacks substance and will eventually fizzle out. If you need to be in a real relationship, quit this one and move on.

See this piece oooh so he can now say it publicly, 9ice apologises, says ‘Toni Payne never cheated on me’

Abolore Adegbola Adigun, popularly known as 9ice, has released a statement saying his former wife Toni Payne never cheated on him. This is coming six years after Toni Payne has went through the torment and accusations of infidelity.

Read statement below:

FILE: 9ice and Tony Payne on their traditional wedding day

It has come to my attention that yesterday some people were up to some mischief harassing Toni Payne regarding an evil rumor that was spread years ago. I would like to use this opportunity to state categorically that the song Once Bitten Twice shy was not and can never be about Toni Payne. I have NEVER accused her or told anybody that she cheated on me because she DID NOT. It did not happen and it was never an issue. Let me be very clear. Toni Payne NEVER cheated on me. Some marriages do not work for different reasons.

Unfortunately I released my album at a very delicate time in our relationship and a song from the album was taken the wrong way and things were blown out of proportion due to my silence.

I have apologized to her in person and she has accepted my apology. I have moved on to a fresh start and she has moved on too. I would appreciate if the general public do the same.

I would appreciate if people refrain from insulting her for something she is not guilty of.
Once again, the song Once Bitten Twice Shy was NEVER about TONI PAYNE. It was just a song. I wish I had come out sooner but I cannot change the past, I can only try and make amends for the future.

It is a new dawn for us all and I hope this closes the topic permanently. If it does not, maybe it is best I release a song clarifying this issue for the 100th time because what started all this was a song and all my effort to clear that air via interviews have been futile. I assure you, I will stop at nothing to make sure this evil rumor is put to sleep once and for all. Again It was never my intention to cause her pain. My apologies to everyone who was affected. God Bless!

Recently, I discovered she was pregnant, and guess who she said was responsible? My loving husband, Deji. When I confronted my husband, he didn’t deny it. I never suspected Deji had been having sexual relations with the maid. I probably should have been more vigilant. Do I even have to blame the girl? What about my husband who could not keep his hands off her? If he had gotten another woman pregnant apart from my maid, it would have been bearable. But how could he stoop so low as to do it with our maid? Right under my nose? Hhmmm…. Now, he’s asking me to forgive his infidelity, claiming that it was the devil’s handiwork. I’m so confused even though I feel so betrayed and tempted to leave the marriage. What would you do if you were in my shoes?

It depends on a lot of factors — Iyabo Ojo, Actress/Producer

It’s his responsibility, so I won’t get involved. I will send her back to her family and ask them to contact her ‘baby papa’. As for my husband, we’ll definitely have a lot of issues and argument. So, it depends. I may walk out of the marriage or stay back and forgive his mistakes.
