Kwara state teachers begin indefinite strike over the non-payment of salaries, but this is bad

Kwara state teachers begin indefinite strike over the non-payment of salaries, but this is bad

Teachers in public primary and Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) in Kwara state yesterday went on strike despite pleas from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.
The teachers started the indefinite strike action yesterday over unpaid three months salaries.
Senior Secondary Schools (SSS) classes went on as usual because the state government did not owe SSS teachers.

Speaking with journalists, the state Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Alhaji Abubakar Musa, said the strike hd to take place due to non payment of October, November and December 2015 salary of the affected teachers.

He said:

“There is no way the hungry teachers could deliver effectively, it is better for teachers to stay at home until the Government is capable of paying them.” he said.

The Kwara state chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has appealed to the striking teachers to suspend the strike.

In a release by its Publicity secretary, Alhaji Sulyman Buhari, said:

“As a party, we wish to state that we feel the concerns and share in the pains of primary school teachers in Kwara State. Quite unfortunate, this issue is chiefly caused by the dwindling allocation from the federation account.

“Therefore, it is not about non-payment of teachers’ salaries but non-availability of funds to pay salaries. It requires collective efforts to address rather than strike action, if the resources are available today, the Governor AbdulFatah Ahmed-led Kwara State Government will pay all teachers like it has always done in the past five years.”

Islamic sect, Shi’ites ask the FG to tell Nigerians the whereabout of El-Zakzaky

Three weeks after his arrest, members of the Islamic sect, Shi’ites, yesterday, asked the Federal Government to tell Nigerians the whereabout of their cleric, Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky and his wife.
The President of the Islamic Movement Media Forum (IMMF), Ibrahim Musa in a statement said:

The condition and whereabouts of the Islamic Movement’s leader Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky as well as that of his wife, are still unknown, three weeks after their arrest and detention by the  security operatives.

“The Islamic Movement as well as the general public are now seriously anxious. “Where is Sheikh Zakzaky and why has he been denied his constitutional rights to an attorney, bail and visitation?

“If the government is truly interested in finding a peaceful way out of this crisis the army initiated and executed, as the government wants the public to believe, it should by now have allowed an unimpeded access to Sheikh Zakzaky.

“First and foremost, his first family members and leading brothers of the Islamic Movement and his doctor should have met him by now, since he was shot by the soldiers when they attacked his residence.

“We are highly agitated by this seeming needless incommunicado the Sheikh has been placed in.

“The Federal Government should tell the public where Sheikh Zakzaky is, because rumours of various degrees are flying about his health.

“We believe it is only when the Sheikh’s health condition is made public by the relevant authorities that the tension brewing among the populace will be doused.”

Former President Goodluck Jonathan wins International Person of the Year 2015 award

Former Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan has been awarded the African Sun Times’ International Person of the Year 2015. The organizers of the award said Jonathan was picked for his role in ensuring a peaceful transition in Nigeria.

"The award was given to Dr. Goodluck Jonathan who shocked the whole world by swiftly calling current Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari and conceding his defeat in the March 29 Nigerian presidential election, thereby stopping the predictions of violent bloodshed in Nigeria, and keeping his words that he would not allow the blood of a Nigerian to be shed to further his political ambitions.
President Jonathan must be applauded for creating a solid foundation for the growth of democracy in Africa. The world has started to recognize President Jonathan’s courageous act.”

See How two brothers were burnt to death for stealing a Motorcycle.

Apparently, jungle justice is still being practised! Two brothers were reportedly burnt to death yesterday, January 3 for allegedly stealing a motorcycle in Cameroon.

In a shocking frenzy of jungle justice, the angry mob beat them with sticks, rods and other dangerous weapons, before finally burning them to death with fuel, tyres and the suspected stolen motorcycle.

A security patrol van which was in the area at that time couldn't stop the angry mob from killing the alleged thieves

Oopz ! Organizers of the Headies 2015 awards tell their side of the story in new press release

After all the drama of the #Headies2015, the organizers of the event have released an official statement.

Read it below.

We are proud of what we have achieved over the years. The Headies stage has birthed the careers of many artistes who are of A-list status today. We are also glad that we have reinstated pride and prestige into the winning of a locally organised music awards and, we have celebrated artistic ingenuity for 10 straight years; a feat no other group before us was able to achieve.

Every year, the screening team collate all creative materials released in the year in review and screen for nomination. This tedious process goes on for at least three months before the screening team comes out with a final list. The voting categories, such as ‘Song Of The Year’, ‘Artist Of The Year’, & ‘Next-Rated’ are left strictly for fans to vote and choose the winners. We wish to say categorically that we do not tamper with the outcome of the voting process. The limit of our involvement in this voting process is to advice the nominees to engage their fans and solicit for their votes. We do not accept any responsibility for failure on the part of the nominees or their record label, when they fail to do this.

Unfortunately, most times, Voting, Year In Review and Definitions Of Each Category, are generally taken for granted by many artists. We can also attest to, and hereby state categorically that, there is no evidence that any of the artistes aggrieved and vocal about their displeasure to the turnout of the award, voted in the ‘Next-Rated’ category, as our voting process captures email addresses and phone numbers.

We have ensured that the awards happened regardless of sponsorship, and that it gets better with each passing year, without giving excuses about challenges. We may not have gotten everything 100% right, but integrity has been our watch-word. The 109 Nigerian artistes that have won can attest to the fact that they did nothing different from those that have not. Awards by nature, are and will always remain, controversial except every nominee gets one.

We try to ensure that winners are within reach before announcing their category, as the whole essence of celebrating talents will be defeated without that.
While it is not out of place for an artiste or a party to vent their disapproval, we strongly condemn all kinds of improper conduct and the use of profanity on live television. In the same manner, we condemn provocative comments. In all, we see no use or reason for a disgruntled artiste or party to destroy valuable properties put in place to give them extra comfort before they perform or come on stage. This is totally unacceptable and will be addressed.

We congratulate all nominees and winners of The Headies 2015 and wish them a more successful 2016.

A Teenage girl commits suicide after her Boyfriend rejected pregnancy

A Teenage girl commits suicide after her Boyfriend rejected pregnancy

A 19-year-old lady, identified simply as Chiamaka, at the weekend committed suicide for being pregnant. Chiamaka took her life in her residence at No. 17 Nwike Street, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.
The lady, who hailed from Ohaozara Local Government Area of the state, was said to have hanged herself after her parents told her that they could not buy her what she had demanded for the Yuletide because they discovered she was pregnant.

A source close to the family said Chiamaka had, after discovering that she was pregnant, informed her boyfriend responsible for the pregnancy and who also lives in the same building but the boy denied being responsible for the pregnancy.

“Chiamaka was not happy that her boyfriend denied her in her trying moment because her parents threatened to sanction her for being pregnant. “The parents were very angry about it because we, the neighbours, always hear when they quarrelled with her because of the pregnancy and she thought the best thing to do was to go to her boyfriend, at least to have a rest of mind.

“But she was disappointed that the boy denied her and I think this might be the reason why she hanged herself,” the source added. When our correspondent visited the house, most of the residents had fled the building for fear of arrest while residents of the street were discussing the incident in groups. When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) George Okafor, said he was yet to receive official report on the matter.

Buhari's Treasury Savings account Can't Be for National Assembly – Senate president Saraki, Rep. Speaker Dogara

Buhari's Treasury Savings account Can't Be for National Assembly – Senate president Saraki, Rep. Speaker Dogara

National Assembly has said it would not be part of Treasury Single Account (TSA) being implemented by the President, Muhammadu Buhari, to reduce the level of corruption in governance.

President Buhari had during last Wednesday’s media chat, said he was having challenge with the National Assembly over the TSA. “We are having problems with them (National Assembly) on TSA. We have to have a closed door session with them,” the president said during the media chat.

But both upper and lower chambers has reacted, saying they would not be part of the TSA.

They claim it amounted to “surrendering of our autonomy to the executive.” Spokespersons of the Senate, Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, said they were in support of the TSA but that they would not be part of it.

“There is no any trouble on TSA, it is as an executive programme and we cannot surrender our autonomy to the executive. Submitting ourselves to the TSA, is surrendering our autonomy to the executive. We are on the first line charge as guaranteed by the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Why should we give you our funds to put in the TSA and then we will be subjected to your own control, is that autonomy?

"That is just the issue; we’ve given our total support to the TSA programme. As far as we are concerned, we cannot subject ourselves to it because it amount to mortgaging our autonomy."

TSA was introduced by the government to reduce the level of corruption in governance. Buhari, shortly after assuming office directed all federal government agencies to key into the system.

Gov. Ambode signs Year 2016 Appropriation Bill into law, promising that the budget would be implemented faithfully

Gov. Ambode signs Year 2016 Appropriation Bill into law, promising that the budget would be implemented faithfully

Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode today signed the N662.588bn Y2016 Appropriation Law with a promise that the budget would be faithfully implemented in line with the determination of his administration to make Lagos work for all, irrespective of age, gender, tribe or status.

The Governor who spoke at a brief but impressive ceremony held at the Banquet Hall, Lagos House, said the 2016 budget was the article of faith of his administration with Lagosians and it was in line with delivering on the promises made to the people.

"The Y2016 budget of N662.588bn will enable our government focus on the present challenges of security, traffic gridlock resolution including physical and social infrastructural developments which have thrown up new challenges quite different from our past experience". he said.

The Governor thanked the House of Assembly for speedily ensuring the passage of the bill which he presented to the House on December 17 and passed on December 31, saying it was no mean feat considering the long hours spent and meticulous scrutiny provided by the House Committee on Appropriation.

While alluding to the fact that the falling crude oil prices has sprung up economic challenges as well as affected the Federal Allocations, he said the State’s budget will be driven by Internally Generated Revenue (IGR). He, however, urged tax payers to fulfill their civic obligations, promising that no stone will be left unturned in delivering value for every Kobo spent.

"I will commend this Budget to all Lagosians and enjoin them to continue collaborating with us in building the Lagos of our dreams", he added.

Giving a breakdown of the 2016 budget, tagged "The Peoples Budget", the Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Mr. Akinyemi Ashade said it will go a long way to promote massive investments in Security, Transport/Traffic management, Physical and Social Infrastructural development in addition to enhancing job creation/opportunities.

He said the 2016 budget is 26 percent higher than the budgets of 2014 and 2015 respectively, with an estimated total revenue of N542.873bn with the balance of N119.714bn expected to be funded through a combination of internal and external loans included World Bank DPO 3 loan which could not be accessed in 2015.

He said the Lagos Internal Revenue Service is expected to generate N300billion equivalent to 78 percent of the total IGR, however adding that while the state government does not intend to introduce new taxes, efforts will be made towards bringing more citizens into the tax net especially the informal sector as well as through the adoption of an automated process to block leakages.

According to Ashade, the Y2016 budget was carefully prepared taking into consideration recent developments in the Global and National Economy Spheres, adding that although the State Government adopted the National Crude Oil projection of $38 per barrel, the budget will be largely driven by IGR made up of taxes, rates and levies.

He said the underlying principles of the budget include planned and systematic maintenance of existing/new infrastructural facilities, completion of ongoing projects, payment of outstanding liabilities, sustenance of the goals of job creation, poverty eradication and wealth creation in addition to efficient service delivery to Lagosians.

Giving a breakdown of the expenditure plan, Ashade said N89billion will be spent on construction, rehabilitation and maintenance of roads and public buildings, while N48.9billion will be expended on various Transportation initiatives including the completion of the Blue Rail Line and expansion of BRT Corridors (Mile 12-Ojota).

The Commissioner also said that N86billion will be spent on the education sector, which according to him, will cover the state government flagship programmes including A-Meal-a-Day initiative to be partly sponsored by the Federal Government, Ibile tablets for Secondary Schools as well as the development of the E-Curriculum initiative.

He gave the expenditure breakdown of other sectors to include, Health (N46.9bn) Agriculture and Food Security (N2bn), Tourism (N2.2bn), Commerce and Industry (N6.2bn), Environment (N27bn), Pensions (N6.5bn), Science and Technology (N9.6bn), Water (N17.6bn), Housing (N25.3bn), Sports Development (N2.3billion), among others.

Man who killed stepmother in Enugu blames it on Indian hemp.

Man who killed stepmother in Enugu blames it on Indian hemp.

A 40-year-old man, Friday Anyim, who killed his father’s wife in Enugu, has blamed the act on hemp, which he smoked regularly.

The incident occurred on December 27 in Umuenem Ezinesi Oduma, a community in the Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State.

It was gathered that the deceased, Bernadette, was one of the three wives of Friday’s father, Mr. Ogbonna Anyim.Friday, a secondary school dropout, is the son of Ogbonna’s first wife, while the deceased, Bernadette, was the second wife.

It was gathered that on the fateful day, Friday was engaged in a heated quarrel with one of his sisters, named Abigail, over his intention to sell a water tank that belonged to the family.

Friday wanted to use the proceeds of the planned transaction to purchase a motorcycle, which he intended to use to operate as a commercial motorcyclist.

The matter was said to have taken an ugly turn when Friday suddenly picked up an axe, and attempted to use the weapon on his sister.

It was learnt that at the same moment, his stepmother, Bernadette, moved to separate Friday and Abigail. However, the axe, which Friday swung at his sister, landed on Bernadette’s neck.

Bernadette collapsed and became unconscious.Friday immediately dropped the axe and took to his heels.

Ogbonna said he received news of the unfortunate development in his household while he was at a village meeting.

He said he rushed home as Bernadette was being taken to a hospital, where she was confirmed dead.

He said.

“I am in pains and I don’t know how to approach this, but I believe that the law will take its course.”

Friday, who was later arrested by the police, expressed regrets over the incident.

He blamed his actions on hemp.

He said,

“I wanted to hit my elder sister, Abigail, with the axe when it mistakenly landed on my stepmother. I acted in anger; I plead for forgiveness. I also advise youths to abstain from taking hemp and other dangerous drugs and avoid anything that can lead them to kill fellow human beings.”
