10 Netiquette guidelines every online student needs to know

10 Netiquette guidelines every online student needs to know
Learn how to be on your best behavior in an online classroom with 10 netiquette guidelines every online student needs to know.

1. NO YELLING, PLEASE
There’s a time and a place for everything—BUT IN MOST SITUATIONS TYPING IN ALL CAPS IS INAPPROPRIATE. Most readers tend to perceive it as shouting , If you have vision issues, there are ways to adjust how text displays so you can still see without coming across as angry.

2. Sarcasm can backfire
As a rule of thumb, it’s best to avoid sarcasm altogether in an online classroom. Instead, lean toward being polite and direct in the way you communicate to avoid these issues. This has happened in lots of my classes.

3. Don’t abuse the chat box
Chat boxes are incorporated into many online classes as a place for students to share ideas and ask questions related to the lesson even if the class is set on MUTE mode. It can be a helpful resource or a major distraction—it all depends on how well students know their classroom netiquette.
“Rather than asking relevant questions or giving clear answers, Treat it like the learning tool it’s meant to be, and try not to distract your classmates with off-topic discussions.

4. Set a respectful tone
Every day may feel like casual Friday in an online classroom where you don’t see anyone in person, but a certain level of formality is still expected in your communication with instructors. In addition to proper punctuation and spelling, it’s good netiquette to use respectful greetings and signatures, full sentences and even the same old “please” and “thank you” you use in real life.

5. Submit files the right way
You won’t be printing assignments and handing to them to your teacher in person, so knowing how to properly submit your work online is key to your success as an online student.
Always adhere to instructions and if I ask for your ICT assignment to be turned in via email in Docx format, you should abide to this, also I have lots of Student who tend to submit answers incomplete in a turn in mode on Google classroom, please take your time to type else where and copy and past to the section you need to submit your answers. Online course instructors often establish ground rules for file assignment submissions, like naming conventions that help them keep things organized or acceptable file formats. Ignoring these instructions is a common example of bad Netiquette.

6. Read first if you came in late
Take some time to read through each of the previous discussion post responses before writing your own response. If the original post asked a specific question, there’s a good chance someone has already answered it. Submitting an answer that is eerily similar to a classmate’s indicates to the instructor that you haven’t paid attention to the conversation thus far. So do take time to read along previous conversation in an online class.

7. Think before you type
A passing comment spoken in class can be forgotten a few minutes later, but what you share in an online classroom is part of a permanent digital record. “Whether or not privacy settings are in place, the internet has a tendency to house things forever, and what you say privately can easily become public,” advises etiquette expert Devoreaux Walton.

8. Be kind, Punctual and a good student.
Online communication comes with a level of anonymity that doesn’t exist when you’re talking to someone face-to-face. Sometimes this leads people to behave rudely when they disagree with one another. You as well have to be time cautious and as well punctual to all schedule classes. Online students probably don’t have the complete anonymity that comes with using a screen name, but you could still fall prey to treating someone poorly because of the distance between screens. Make a point to be kind and respectful in your comments—even if you disagree with someone.

9. Use a name you bear in School.
Many students give the idea of Nick naming themselves in an online class and this gives the instructor a poor view of whom you are , and as well as allocation of grades to you, so to avoid errors like this , always use your official name in an online class.

10. Participate in any requested activities.
This is only shown if you have your icon display based on the difference in technology apps used for teaching, as for Zoom, it's a must you turn on your videos so the instructor can have a better view of your attention.

Thank you.
Anthony Adesanya.

TOPIC: DATA PROCESSING

TOPIC: DATA PROCESSING
Definition of Data

Data are raw facts. They are figures, words and symbols that have not been processed or put into meaningful form. Data can be referred to as raw material from which information is produced. Data is the plural of datum.

Types of Data

1.  Numeric data: Data consisting of digits and not letters of alphabets or special character. E.g. 0 – 9

2.  Alphabetic data: Data consisting of letters and not digits or special characters. A-Z and a-z

3.  Alpha-numeric data: Data consisting of digits, alphabets as well special characters. Ussm12, #,!,? 07/01/2019, etc.

Definition of Information

Information is processed data. Information is the result of processing, manipulating and organizing data in a way that adds to the knowledge of the person receiving it.

Data can be processed physically by human beings, example calculation such as addition, division, etc to give it more meaning. Data can also be processed using machines like calculators, computer, etc.

Definition of Data Processing

Data processing is a computer process that converts data into information.

Data Processing Cycle

Data processing cycle is the sequence of stages in processing data. The stages in data processing include:

1.  Data gathering or collection

2.  Data collation or preparation

3.  Input stage

4.  Processing stage

5.  Storage stage

6.  Output stage

Data Gathering: This is the process of collecting data together before processing.

The methods of gathering data include:

a.   Interview

b.  Questionnaire

c.   Record review

d.  Observation

Before data are gathered the following must be taken into consideration:

i.  The types of data needed

ii. The scope of the data

iii. Purpose of the data

iv. Relevance of the data

v.  The plan for gathering

vi. The methods for data collection

Data Collation: Data collation is the assembly of data in standard order

Input Stage: At this stage data are entered into a device like calculator or computer for processing. In computer, data are entered via input devices such as, Keyboard, Mouse, Joy Stick, Light pen, Track Ball, Scanner, Graphic Tablet, Microphone, Magnetic Ink Card Reader (MICR), Optical Character Reader (OCR), Bar Code Reader, Optical Mark Reader (OMR),

Processing Stage: This is the stage whereby data are converted from raw form to information or a useable form. In computer, data are processed in the Central Processing Unit (CPU). The CPU is the brain of the computer.  It serves as the main information processor in a computer.

Storage Stage: This is the stage where data are kept after processing. Processed data are stored in the main memory. The main memory is also known as primary or internal memory. There are basically two types of primary memory:

a.   RAM (Random Access Memory)

b.  ROM (Read Only Memory)

Output Stage: This is the last stage of data processing where the result gathered from processing the data is sent out for the user to see and use. Examples of output device include Monitor, Printer, Projector, Speaker, and Plotter. Output devices such as printers and monitors send the result on paper and screen respectively.

Importance of the Computer as a Tool for processing Data

Computers have an edge over other devices for data processing for data processing for its:

1.  Increased Accuracy: Computer as a tool for processing data has the ability to perform rapid and accurate calculation. Computers don’t make mistakes as human do except a wrong instruction is given.

2.  Efficient Storage facilities: Computer storage is more efficient such that the quantity of data stored at any point can be accessed anytime. It is reliable in terms of storage

3.  Fast Access to Information: Unlike searching for files in cabinets which takes longer time, computer has the ability to supply stored information quickly and easily.

4.  Handling Repetitive Tasks: Computer can perform a single task repetitively without being tired unlike you and me.

5.  The computers have the ability to work continuously and under conditions not suitable for human beings e.g. very cold or very hot environment.

The story of Yyvone Maha

Now I know my Naija 80s babies gonna feel this one...
I think it was sometime in late 1985 that I first heard that Yvonne Maha was dead.

Two years earlier, she had been the sensational talent find of 1983. Her Sonny Okosuns-produced debut Child For Sale had been a smashing success--the toast of the primary school hit parade, the soundtrack to many a preteen birthday party and family roadtrip. She had blown into our lives like a whirlwind of adorableness and goshdarn it, the public was sucked in. Now two years had passed since anybody had seen or heard anything from her. Two years can feel like a mighty long time when you've been alive for just over a decade yourself, and people started to wonder and speculate as to why she hadn't come out with another album.

And then the news of her fate hit the national gossip network: Yvonne had gotten pregnant. Tried to have an abortion. Something went wrong. She died.

Now this puzzled the hell out of me at the time. "She was having an abortion? How old was she, thirteen?"

"Yes," my aunt replied sternly. "That's why she died. She was too young and her body could not withstand the pregnancy. And the moral of the story is: Don't have sex before marriage! You hear?"

Well, however well-meaning the moral may have been, the story itself was soon discredited as pure fabu(lism): Some people knew which secondary school Yvonne Maha went to and confirmed that she had never been pregnant and was certainly not dead. Everybody breathed a sigh of relief and went back to waiting for her follow-up to Child For Sale.

About two years later, the rumor mill once again reported again that Yvonne Maha had died.

"I thought they said she died two years ago!" I groaned.

"That was just a rumor," my aunt clucked. "She didn't die back then, but she's dead now. This time it's true."

"How did she die?"

"Complications from abortion."

Oooooooooookay.

"And that is why you should not have sex before marriage!"

After that, the "Yvonne Maha is dead" story would resurface anew every few years. And with each new iteration, its peddlers would firmly assure you that yes, this time she really was dead and that yes, she died during an abortion. As recently as 2005 I heard people telling that story.

Well, for the record: In 2007 Yvonne Maha is alive and well and living in Brazil. But the persistent reports of her demise do kind of beg an interesting question: Why did the public seem to so desperately want--almost need--Yvonne Maha dead? And from an abortion, of all things? And why is it that as years have gone by and Yvonne Maha has receded somewhat in the public's memory, the "death by abortion" story has been passed on to early-90s preteen singer Tosin Jegede? (For the record: Tosin Jegede is not dead, she's a sculptor.)

Could it be that these little girl singers represent purity and innocence, and so the thought of them growing up into womanhood and inevitably engaging in womanly activities such as sexual intercourse is so unacceptable that we must create these myths where their sexual precocity leads to their destruction?

> shrug < Shit, I dunno.

Anyway, if you were a kid in Nigeria in the 80s, you almost certainly know this album inside out. Listening to it now, I'm surprised at how well it holds up for me--I mean, even if twee cutesy-kiddie stuff like this makes your molars hurt, you can't completely front on the music itself, can you? This was the period when Sonny Okosuns could do no wrong and his Ozziddi band was on the way to becoming the Ozziddi brand. The tasteful instrumental performances and production on this album are very much on par with great Okosuns albums such as Fire in Soweto and 3rd World. I remember really loving the backing vox on this record, and they still sound pretty good to me, too.

The song "Don't Treat Me Like a Child" still makes me slightly uncomfortable, too. I used to love this song back in '83, when I first realized that I loved ballads, but even then I thought it was a bit on the creepy side. It was so obviously a ventriloquist number with a grownup putting these supposedly cute/coy words into a little girl's mouth, but what made it particularly discomfiting was the video: Yvonne and some boy sitting on a bench at Apapa Amusement Park, dressed in their best birthday party duds as she serenades him. Both of them look ungodly embarrassed by the whole affair, especially the end where she reluctantly slides over (you can actually see her blushing as she looks off camera at someone who is obviously goading her forward) and hugs him, singing "Wait for me to grow up... Then I will kiss you, too... Then I will kiss you... Wait for me to grow up, then I will love you... too."

And the worst thing about it was that rumor had it the boy was her brothers

Man Who Dressed Like A Lady To
Extort Money From Guys, Caught &
Stripped Naked.

We caught this one today, beautiful Mr. Arinze Aleke who dressed like a woman.

He successfully damaged our three plates of
pepper soup and two bottles of Heineken,
immediately we demanded for her particulars, she turned out to be another Bobrisky.

I maintain that several boobs are risky.

He will pay for the pepper soup and Heineken because he obtained them from us by false pretence.

The point now is what the mob did, are they justified, why can't it be taken to the law enforcement body to do justice.

World In Tears As Conjoined Twins Dies at 68years (Photos)
Ronnie and Donnie Gaylon are the twin brother who are Conjoined. I regret to announce there death. See Photos of the Twins in this post.
The brothers died on Saturday at the age of 68.

Dayton Daily reported that Dave Galyon, a brother, announced in a Facebook post Saturday morning that his brothers had died that morning, and the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office confirmed the deaths were reported to that office.

The Dayton community followed the brothers’ lives since their birth.Donnie came first on Oct. 28, 1951, with Ronnie surprising everyone minutes later with his very literal connection to his brother, wrote the Dayton Daily News in 2009 after an interview with the twins. “We had a good doctor,” Ronnie said in 2009 .
“We’re lucky.”

They were born at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Dayton. At the time, separation would have been difficult if not impossible, and their parents made the decision to let nature take its course. The Galyons had four arms and four legs, separate hearts, lungs and stomachs. Their vital organs joined in the digestive tracts, with one lower intestine.
They never for one day speak against their maker, if you are alive today irrespective of any circumstances while not use just few seconds to say God I Thank You.

Researchers Deliver News to the Whole World After Latest Study on COVID-19

Researchers Deliver News to the Whole World After Latest Study on COVID-19

A study that has been performed by researchers from China, has found that humans can be protected from being reinfected by novel Covid-19. According to the reports by Daily Nation, the study that was performed basing on monkeys found that they can be protected from the virus for over 28 days later without being infected again.

However, while the monkeys displayed the ability of being not reinfected for 28 days, it is still unclear whether in humans would be more or less. But the team has said that the world should have to wait to up even months and years to see whether how long people who have been infected can be protected from re-infection.

Researchers from Peking Union Medical College carried out a study on rhesus macaques to find out if they have a short-term immunity to the disease. They infected 6 of them with a dose of SARS-CoV-2 virus and they seemed to develop mild symptoms after 3 days after which they took approximately 2 weeks to recover. After 28-days period from the time of infection, they re-infected 4 of the rhesus macaques with another dose of the virus.

After some few days, they showed a short increase in body temperature but were never re-infected by the virus. According to the researchers, the viral load took around 3 days before reaching its peak after infection.

Later, the monkeys showed a strong immune response after infection which in return produces neutralizing antibodies that prevents them from becoming reinfected. However, the researchers have claimed that they need to experiment more to see how long the immunity takes before reducing.

Like and share with friends. Thank you.

2020 requirements for the ikoyi marriage registry.

            Ikoyi Registry Requirements 2020
Ikoyi registry requirements

Ikoyi registry in Lagos: All you need to know about Ikoyi registry requirements in 2019 and some other information that you will find useful.

First, what is a court wedding in Nigeria?

The first step to carry in legalizing your wedding in Nigeria is to find a reliable registry to make the necessary inquiries. The court wedding has been recommended by the Federal Government of Nigeria with the intention to stand as a proof for a marriage contract between couples. Court marriage has been preserved under the marriage act chapter 218 of the law of the Federation of Nigeria in the year 1990.

How to go about Court Marriage?

You want to marry and your choice is court marriage. Now you are stranded because you don’t know how to go about it. You have landed yourself on a website that can take care of that.

I shall provide the necessary information you need to know when planning to have a registry marriage, especially in Lagos. Presently, it has been confirmed that there are two Federal governments marriage registries in Nigeria of which are: The Federal Marriage Registry Abuja and The Federal Marriage Registry Lagos.

They are classified under the ministry of interior. As a matter of fact, I will be discussing more the Ikoyi Marriage registry in Lagos as the focus to explain others.

You will be informed about the overview, detailed guide, and expectations that must be met before you can be allowed to register your marriage with them.  It is popularly known that almost every day people marry each other and as such Ikoyi Registry is usually a go-to place for court marriages.

Marriage activities always take place every week. I have to tell you this as the first expectation.  One other thing about the registry is that it is one of the people’s choice therefore, you must understand that there could be some congestion in terms of attendance to each marriage to be registered a week but relax your mind, every organization knows how to manage its affairs to make things easy for its clients.

These are majorly the activities that take place in the registry: obtainment of marriage certificate or license, marriage and family counseling, Marriage oats, and ceremonies that involve marriage.

Days and Schedules in Ikoyi Marriage Registry

If there is any virtue I like about organization, it is the word organization itself. It makes things go smooth. It makes things work as planned. At Ikoyi Marriage Registry, some days are set aside for different activities, for instance, Tuesdays are set aside for Oath Swearing, Wednesday through Friday are set aside for Marriage contracts.

In some specific settings, for instance, if you want your marriage to come on Monday or Saturday, it will attract some fee which you will know when you get there.

However, as far as I am concerned, the registry handles marriages for residents from Lagos, South-South, South-East, and South-West.  Various types of marriages are carried out at Ikoyi registry such as Muslim marriages, Christian marriages, Nigerian and non-Nigerian Marriages, and None-Nigerian Marriages.

What are the Steps to follow when planning to Wed at Ikoyi Registry?

I am about to discuss the steps to follow while you plan to wed at Ikoyi registry, based on the type—i.e. either as a Nigerian to another Nigerian or others such as Muslim or Christian marriages and they are as explained below:

A Nigerian to another Nigerian Marriage Registry Guides in Ikoyi Registry

After the agreement to marry between the couple, the First Step is to obtain forms:

There is a form called the notice of marriage you will have to fill the form with your name, birth date and surnames in bold letters and then underline. One passport will be demanded from each partner, so you should attach it to the form you just filled. A specific fee is charged after the submission of the form.

After the submission, you can leave to return to the registry 21 days later with the entire forms given to you.  Thereafter another form will be issued to you to fill they are “AFFIDAVIT TO APPLY FOR MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE”. The forms shall be submitted along with the birth certificate of the would-be couple.  In the absence of the birth certificate, declaration of age certificate can be presented in place of the original birth certificate.

What other forms shall be presented?

It is not only the notice of marriage form that will be collected, but there are also other forms you must obtain and none of them is for free. I shall mention the fee to get these forms soon. However, you can learn various forms and how to fill them. The rules and regulations guiding them will not also be left untouched for a better understanding of the processes involved in court marriage in Nigeria. Other forms that shall be presented are:

Certificate of Bachelorhood and Spinsterhood

The couple has not married before will have to provide these two certificates, one from the male and another from the female.  If one of them has married before, will have to swear an affidavit for the number of children previously had in the previous marriage; the purpose is for justice and transparency between the two parties. You will submit these forms too with a stipulated fee charged.  Once the registrar has confirmed the submission of these forms, a date for the couple’s interview is set.

Second Step – “THE REQUIREMENTS”

Firstly, the registry will expect you to fix a date for the commencement of your wedding of which you must present. That is according to the law; therefore, for your wedding to take place and be confirmed, you have to carry out this step first.

In all marriages, two witnesses are enough to join a man and a woman together. The registry will require that you provide two witnesses each—one male and a female or sometimes, a Qur’an or Bible depending on the decision of the registry. The Qur’an or Bible stands as a witness or an oath against any of the couple that may not be sincere about his or her opinion; though it is a religious belief and since the couples are believers, they will have to abide by such rule as pertaining to their religious opinions.). The next is to present 2 rings, a Qur’an or a Bible depending on your faith.

The Third Step is to inform the Registry of your Attire

What kind of clothing are you going to wear on your wedding day in the registry? Is it native, or English? Both partners must provide an answer to this question and the truth is that the matter of the attire to wear that day is not taken lightly, in fact, dresses such as Jeans and Short sleeves and shorts are not allowed as attires for registry wedding.

Nigerian to non-Nigerian/ non-Nigerian to non-Nigerian

In the case of the wedding of the ones as mentioned in the subheading above, these are the steps to follow:

Step 1: The collection of forms: there is a form called “particular for a special marriage license”. It is designed to obtain detailed information and data about the couple. There will also be a written application for special marriage presented by either of the partners as the case may be. The presentation of Birth certificates or attestation of age of the two parties will be provided and it must have been obtained from the National Population Commission for Nigeria only. Requirements such as scanned copies of the data pages found on the couple’s international passport and stamped entry will be provided too.

A recent passport of the couple will be demanded and a certificate or letter of bachelorhood or spinsterhood from a reliable law court or an approved body must be presented too. However, if either of the parties has previously married, an affidavit of the previous marriage must be provided and should be obtained in Nigeria. The evidence of a single with child or children will also be presented before the commencement of the marriage and it must be collected from a reliable court of law in Nigeria along with the evidence of the payment fee.

How Much Can you spend to Marry at Ikoyi Registry?

There has been a rumor that Ikoyi registry is too expensive, don’t forget that in Nigeria, for a man to get married traditionally, will spend at least 100 thousand depending on the cultural demand, whereas, some traditional will make you spend up to a million just to get married. This should be an eye-opener that getting married at Ikoyi registry is very cheap. With just 50,000 thousand Naira, you are good to go.

What is the fee for Court Wedding?

I have made mention of some forms above, they are not for charity, you have to pay for them, and this is because the registry has made itself clear that there are no Santan or some saints that are ready to gift out Christmas gifts. To obtain the forms above, you will need to pay the amount of just 31,000 which will cover for the application form, the process, and affidavit. It was obtained at a lesser price previously but now being increased. It used to be 25,000 Naira.

Other Miscellaneous expenses

You will pay money for the bouquet: this is not compulsory, however, it is 500 Naira. This is demanded by some women that are not working with the registry. However, you must know that it is not compulsory but optional.

Drummers Money: You will pay at least 100 or 200 Naira to the drummers who will sing and drum for you and your spouse to dance. If you are capable, you can pay above the mentioned amounts for the drummers.

The Cash for Chairs Rented

You will also be required to pay money for the chairs that are rented for your wedding. This is normally done before you enter the registry. It is 200 Naira for you, the spouse and the relatives and friends that came with you. This means you will multiply 200 Naira by the number of guests that you have.

Taking of Oath: you will also have to take an oath before the marriage can be legalized for you.  the process involved will be listed below:

  • Swearing of an affidavit before the registrar or a recognized religion minster.
  • The penalties that are involved in the breach of marriage will be explained in details to the couples.
  • The affidavit will then be signed by the registrar as a sign of the oath being taken.
  • Lastly, the minister will issue a certificate and the give the couple the license in the form of a form named form D so as to allow the couples to celebrate their union.

Celebration of the Marriage

A date is set aside for the marriage, and it will be chosen by the couple which must be done within the period of three months.

Sample of Court marriage certificate in Nigeria

Sometimes, we take things as none serious as a comedian on the stage but it does not speak well of the importance of what we actually want to achieve as a goal. Anyway, I am not a cleric who gives the sermon, all I am targeting right now is to show you the sample of what a court marriage certificate looks like. This is very important to inform you ahead of time as a guide to not mistaking another certificate for a court marriage certificate. Though, if you follow the right channel to perform a court marriage, there is every assurance that the real certificate will be presented to you but to avoid any doubt, I decided to make available the sample of the marriage certificate:

Note: if you are foreign nationals, you are expected to present any of the requirements as demanded above in an equivalent institution in their various countries. You will equally provide the original copies of the above requirements.

Just in case you need help with your Ikoyi registry marriage documentation, and in order to avoid being scammed at the Registry. Please send an email to admin@deedeesblog.com.

CORONAVIRUS: SHOULD WE BE WORRIED ABOUT OUR DOGS AND CATS?

CORONAVIRUS: SHOULD WE BE WORRIED ABOUT OUR DOGS AND CATS?

Coronavirus: Should we be worried about our Dogs and Cats?

The coronavirus 2019 (or COVID-19) disease, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, is now on the lips of all news readers around the world. The epidemic which started in Wuhan, China, is now raging across the planet and was therefore declared a pandemic on March 11 by the director of the World Health Organization.

Perhaps you have followed the news and know that a tiger from the New York zoo tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus on April 5? In fact, several zoo cats have shown symptoms of respiratory illness following the probable contact with an employee infected with COVID-19.

As this kind of test requires a general anesthesia on such exotic animals, and since these animals had a high anesthetic risk due to their symptoms, it was agreed to test only one tiger for COVID-19, for their safety. It is therefore assumed that these other zoo felines may also have been affected by this coronavirus.

So, what does this mean for our dear pets?

Until now, we thought they were safe from this highly contagious virus. Is this still the case?

Do we need to take extra precautions to protect our dogs and cats from COVID-19?

Certainly, the large family of coronaviruses includes around 40 different viruses and some can actually infect cats and dogs. But what about the dreaded COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2)?

The rest of this article will answer your questions.

CAN HUMANS TRANSMIT COVID-19 TO ANIMALS?

Now that coronavirus is much more common in society, it has been reported that there is a possibility of infection in animals who are in close contact with humans infected with COVID-19.

As there had been no study on the subject and no case had been reported until recently in animals, the scientific community assumed that the risk of transmission of COVID-19 from a human to an animal was minimal, or even non-existent. However, the recent case of the tiger in New York, the first animal that tested positive for the virus in the United States, has changed this theory.

In addition, a certain number of cases of COVID-19 in dogs and cats have also been reported worldwide.

That said, although it’s possible, the risk of pets being infected with this disease still seems very low. The cases that exist to date are very isolated.

Studies are underway to better understand the transmission of COVID-19 in animals, but for the moment, no scientific study officially confirms the risk of transmission of the virus to our pets.

As of March 25 2020, tests have been done on 17 dogs and 8 cats living in families affected by COVID-19, and only two dogs have tested positive for the virus. However, it is not prudent to draw conclusions from such an experiment, given the low number of subjects tested.

CAN DOGS AND CATS INFECT HUMANS WITH COVID-19?

To date, there is no evidence that pets can transmit the COVID-19 virus to humans.

Although the epidemic is suspected to have an animal source (possibly a bat) and to originate from a live animal market, the virus is now spread from person to person by droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes or splutters.

I want to be clear about this. While a minority of pets can possibly catch the virus, there is no reason to believe, at present, that dogs and cats can infect humans. And there is no reason to remove an animal from a house, even if you test positive for the virus, unless you yourself are too sick to look after it.

The coronavirus should not be justification for the abandonment of a pet.

If you or a family member becomes ill, simple precautions can be taken to protect your pet from COVID-19.

WHAT PRECAUTIONS CAN WE TAKE TO PROTECT OUR ANIMALS FROM COVID-19?

If you have coronavirus, you should limit contact with your pets as much as possible, just as you would do with those living with you.

If this is your situation, ask someone else in the house to feed your pet, for example. Avoid petting your dog or cat and do not share table food with them. If nobody can help you at home, wash your hands well before and after any contact with your pet.

In short, how to protect your animal from COVID-19:

  • If you are sick, ask someone else in your house to take care of your pet.
  • If you are sick, avoid touching, petting, or sharing food.
  • Wash your hands frequently and cough in your elbow.
  • If your dog comes into contact with someone who is contaminated, bathe him with water and pet shampoo.
  • Do not use a Purell type disinfectant on the coat of your animals, it is much too strong.
  • Keep cats indoors and dogs on a leash when you walk. The virus can survive for a while on their coat, following contact with an infected person.
  • Strengthen your pet's immune system

More generally, even if you are not sick, you can protect your companion by making sure you have stored enough food and medication in the event that you become ill and need to be quarantined.

A STRONG IMMUNE SYSTEM IS THE BEST ASSET FOR FIGHTING A VIRUS

An effective and strong immune system is the best way to protect anyone (animal or human) from COVID-19 or any other virus.

It’s the same principle for any disease.

The body has all the defenses necessary to fight an intruder. It is therefore important to make sure you adopt a healthy lifestyle and a good diet to be sure of putting the odds on your side and on the side of your pet.

This is particularly important in the event of a pandemic.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF COVID-19 IN ANIMALS?

As mentioned above, the tiger in New York with COVID-19 had respiratory symptoms.

Some pets who have had this coronavirus have shown no clinical symptoms.

The cases are still too sporadic and the studies too early to draw conclusions. It is therefore difficult to answer this question at the moment.

HOW DOES CORONAVIRUS MANIFEST IN HUMANS?

The new strain of coronavirus, COVID-19, can severely affect some people and cause their death. This new coronavirus causes damage to the respiratory system and has the following symptoms

  • Cough
  • Fever
  • Shortness of breath

Similar to the flu virus, the symptoms may be minor for some and severe for others, depending on how effective their immune system is at fighting the intruder.

In immunocompromised people, a secondary bacterial infection (pneumonia, for example) can develop and complicate the state of health of those affected.

Other types of coronavirus exist and several can affect our dogs and cats. These are not the subject of a pandemic, like SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), but it is still interesting to learn more about what exists in the world of viruses.

  CORONAVIRUS (CCOV) IN DOGS

As you probably know by now, coronaviruses are a large family of viruses, characterized by their crown shape. COVID-19 is therefore not the only disease caused by these.

In fact, a dog can contract a canine coronavirus which affects the respiratory system (CRCoV) and two other types of coronaviruses which infect the digestive system (CCoV type I and II).

THE “RESPIRATORY” CORONAVIRUS IN DOGS (CRCOV)

This is part of the kennel cough complex. In other words, when a dog contracts kennel cough from contact with another dog or with a contaminated surface, it catches both this virus (or another), as well as a bacteria (Bordetella bronchiseptica). These act together and cause respiratory problems. This infection is very contagious between dogs.

THE “INTESTINAL” CORONAVIRUS IN DOGS (CCOV TYPE I AND II)

This also causes a very contagious infection, especially in puppies. It mainly causes diarrhea, but is generally without serious consequences. However, it can be dangerous when combined with another disease such as parvovirus.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF CANINE CORONAVIRUS?

The symptoms vary depending on the type of infection, as mentioned above. Here is a list of coronavirus symptoms in dogs according to the type of canine coronavirus.

 SYMPTOMS OF “RESPIRATORY” CORONAVIRUS:

 SYMPTOMS OF “INTESTINAL” CORONAVIRUS:

There is a coronavirus vaccine for dogs for the intestinal coronavirus. However, there is no agreement on it in the veterinary world as this virus mainly affects young puppies. Dogs old enough to be vaccinated are less likely to get the virus.

CAN CORONAVIRUS IN DOGS SPREAD TO HUMANS?

According to current knowledge, dogs cannot transmit coronavirus to humans, regardless of the type (respiratory or intestinal).

However, it can transmit other types of viruses, bacteria or fungi. So, if you are unsure about your dog's diagnosis, it’s best to check with a vet in order to limit the risk of transmission.

  CORONAVIRUS (FCOV) IN CATS

Can my cat get coronavirus? As mentioned above, your cat could possibly catch COVID-19 according to current theories.

Furthermore, it is also vulnerable to feline coronavirus (FCoV). This virus can take different forms, being the intestinal form and the form responsible for feline infectious peritonitis.

 FELINE “INTESTINAL” CORONAVIRUS (FECV)

What is coronavirus in cats? The first form of feline coronavirus (FECV) is called feline enteric coronavirus (intestinal) and can cause digestive upset and symptoms such as diarrhea and sometimes vomiting. It is considered mild and is often asymptomatic (without symptoms).

The coronavirus is transmitted very contagiously via stools and saliva. Cats living in communities or sharing a litter box, as well as cats that move about outside are therefore at greater risk of catching this virus.

 FIP CATS

Coronavirus in cats becomes worrisome when it causes feline infectious peritonitis (FIP).

What is FIP in cats? Following errors in its replication, the coronavirus undergoes what is called a mutation. It therefore changes from the “intestinal” form to a new form that can cause this very dangerous disease.

How do cats get FIP? The coronavirus in question is mainly transmitted through the stool (oral-fecal contact), but also via aerosols (much like the flu).

Feline infectious peritonitis can progress in two ways, either to a wet or dry form. Among other things, wet FIP results in an accumulation of fluids in the abdominal cavity or chest, which, as you might expect, is not good news.

SYMPTOMS OF CORONAVIRUS IN CATS (FELINE INFECTIOUS PERITONITIS)

Above all, feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is difficult to diagnose, as a result of its classic symptoms during the early stages. A cat may first lose its appetite, have a fever and be lethargic. A cat with FIP will not improve following antibiotic treatment.

SYMPTOMS OF THE WET FORM OF FELINE INFECTIOUS PERITONITIS (FIP)

SYMPTOMS OF THE DRY FORM OF FELINE INFECTIOUS PERITONITIS (FIP)

As you can see, the symptoms of cat FIP are very varied, which makes its detection difficult. A definite diagnosis can only be made post-mortem. Some tests do exist, however, to help the vet distinguish feline infectious peritonitis from other diseases.

In summary, pets are probably not immune to COVID-19 (or other coronaviruses, by the way). Although the cases listed are rare at the moment, it is prudent to use precautionary measures in the event that you become ill, in order to protect your dog or cat.

There is still no need to construct a facial mask for your doggie, but if you are sick, physical distancing and hand washing will also be useful to prevent possible transmission of the virus to your animals.

Additionally, strengthening your pet's immune system helps ensure they have the best defenses against a virus.

Studies are underway to teach us more about this disease in our pets. These experiments take time, so you will have to be patient.

The whole planet is mobilizing to bring us good news as quickly as possible. Until then, it's important not to jump to any conclusions. Let us take advantage of our isolation to spend quality time with our pets, who themselves benefit from our company more than ever.

We are living in a time of exceptional, historic and difficult crisis. We are a team, let's support each other through this event.

Everything is going to be alright!

 Thanks for going through.

Stay safe.
